Designed to be a luxurious home in the 19th century, Château de Riolas was built by one of France’s first rubber barons.

An 1800s château in southwest France, a quiet refuge for friends and guests, where horses, dogs, flowers, good food and better conversations are the order of the day. After changing ownership over the years, it is again a private residence surrounded by its park, centenary chestnut, oak, plane trees, and meadows. Château de Riolas is undergoing careful renovations to preserve its history character and bring it up to contemporary standards.

We have four dogs and three horses (soon four, with another mini on the way). This is, reasonably, enough animals.

We are visiting my daughter’s farm in California, technically just observing. Her geese had other plans. They followed me across the yard, loudly, as if my visit required a formal announcement.

I did not enjoy this. I am not sure I like geese.
I should mention I love foie gras. The geese don’t know that.

I can.

The arena is too dangerous for my horses. I won’t risk it for them until it’s fixed.

But our park…the first time I saw it, I dreamed of riding through it one day.

Ancient trees. Soft ground. Dappled light. No boundaries. Freedom.

That dream came true. Because the arena isn’t safe. And then Mica, all 34 inches of him, decided he could pull a carriage through it.

I can isn’t just my motto. It’s ours too.

The contractor didn’t come back. The arena isn’t fixed. But we’re here, riding, building something worth believing in.

I believe that I can do things even when the obstacles are heartbreaking.

I built a dressage arena for my horses. I hired a local contractor because I wanted to support my community.

I paid him in full.

The sand is too deep. The geotextile is coming through the surface. The watering pump was never installed. The edges are already failing.

He hasn’t come back.
