Aragats / Jrvezh / Sevan, Armenia on October 5, 6 and 10, 2024

It was 1.5 years ago. Sun was stormy almost every night for the whole week. I was hunting Aurora in Armenia with my friend Alexey who was always ready say ‘Yes’ to my ‘Let’s go look at stars in the middle of nowhere right now?’

Our first try was Aragats as one of the darkest and highest places — with no luck. Then Jrvezh, but I didn’t research the viewpoints properly and since there was no viewpoint from which you could see north I decided to at least take pictures of Ararat — no idea whether you could see Aurora that night. Finally, on Oct 10th, the KP numbers were crazy, people were reporting seeing Aurora just about everywhere, so I rent a car, called Alexey and we went to Sevan. Unfortunately, it appeared to be too polluted with light in the usual local ‘look-how-insanely-bright-my-street-lights-are-can-you-match-that-loser’ way, but nevertheless, even with the naked eye you could see something pink behind the clouds. After shooting a couple of test pictures I saw it much better and even thought I’m seeing something toxic coming from some shady factory, but KP numbers matched the possibility of seeing it even from Armenia, and reports from other southern places were confirming that, so... I suppose it was actually Aurora as it can be seen from so far in the south. In an hour or so the sky was totally covered with clouds and you could see neither pink-ish light, neither stars. Why now? IDK — I posted some timelapses recently, why not post these ones too possibly maybe.

Last Sunday I had pleasure to listen to some nice jazz live at Tenho Restobar in Helsinki. My favourite kind of jazz that doesn't really sounds like conventional jazz. Something between old vibes of The Cinematic Orchestra and ECM. All played by Aurora Hentunen and her wonderful band. Couldn't resist playing with digital multi-exposure. Spent some film too, no idea when it's going to be developed and scanned, as usual, now that there are no labs known to me that develop slide film with pushing. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But at least I have these digital ones. BTW, if that wasn't clear, I highly recommend checking Aurora's music on streaming platforms!

Apparently you just can’t go wrong with jazz musicians from New York. Especially with those who tour Europe. Even though I usually prefer more experimental jazz, I’m so happy that I decided to randomly go there this evening. Their performance was so groovy! I can’t remember when my feet were uncontrollably tapping to the rhythm the last time.

Naturally, I couldn’t miss the opportunity to exercise with digital double exposures, especially with such challenging lighting conditions. Can’t say I’m too impressed with myself, and I really missed my bright vintage lenses that I left ‘home’, but anyways, I’ve got some shots I certainly like (if I silence that over-exacting inner critic).

Kind of a teaser for those who made it to this line and cares of what I was doing with film: I'm on a vacation currently and feeling like I’m about to finally find some energy and time to publish a good bunch of very cool film doubles with many good people on them that I tried to start publishing for some months already. And there’s even one 4 year old film roll: 3 years of shooting, one – developing (I know, crazy), so... wish me luck.

And now for something completely different. Caught my friends from Veiila on Saturday evening playing at Muha.Bar.Yvn and finally got a chance to shoot portrait-like double-exposures with the new camera. Can't remember when I was shooting people on digital cameras the last time, especially double exposures!

I've been actively thinking of visiting Byurakan observatory for a couple of weeks already, but today was a special day: +5°C at midnight (I consider this warm in late December), clear skies, moonless night, and the last day to watch Geminids. So, I messaged a couple of friends in the late evening and Anja decided to join me, so we departed. It was a bit stressful sometimes because of aggressive dogs and weird people, and also we couldn't get into the observatory itself (it was too late and we had to book it before coming anyway), but we had a very nice walk around. I saw two shooting stars, Anja — one. Also, we met a very friendly cat in the middle of nowhere on our way back. We couldn't see the Milky Way, but the amount of stars in the sky was nevertheless breathtaking.
