Last weekend I visited Fuerteventura for the first time and realized that for me Gran Canaria — specifically Maspalomas — is the best place on earth in terms of climate! 😁

Fuerteventura is incredibly scenic and windy, and I will definitely come back there again, but the strong wind was literally knocking me off my feet — that experience was unusual! The name of the island fully lives up to it! 😁

This is crown daisy (Glebionis coronaria), a Mediterranean annual that blooms after the winter rains.

🐝 A valuable nectar source for pollinators

⁉️ Did you know that one of the most visible parrots in the Canary Islands is officially classified as an invasive species? 🦜

🦜 Rose-ringed Parakeets (Psittacula krameri) are not native to the islands, but they’ve established stable wild populations thanks to the mild climate.

⚠️ They compete with native cavity-nesting birds for limited nesting spaces (Strubbe & Matthysen, 2009, Biological Conservation) and are included on the EU list of Invasive Alien Species (Regulation 1143/2014) 😲❗

By the way, did you know that in the Maspalomas dunes you’re now allowed to walk only along the specially marked paths?

This rule is there to protect the dunes, which are a unique natural reserve with a very fragile ecosystem 🌿

💶 If someone goes outside the designated areas, a fine may be issued (amounts usually start from around €150, depending on the situation) 😲
