April 9, 1917.
5:30 a.m. on Easter Monday.
Snow. Mud. Silence, and then the crackle of artillery fire.

On this morning, over a century ago, Canadian soldiers began their advance toward Vimy Ridge. A battle that had already defeated countless others.

Over the hours that followed, they took ground that wasn’t supposed to be taken.
Through coordination. Preparation. And an enormous amount of work behind the scenes.

It became a defining moment for Canada, and a costly one.
Over 10,000 Canadians were killed or wounded in just a few days.

In Hidden Heroes, historians Ted Barris, Geoffrey Hayes and the late Tim Cook share what made that moment possible, brought to life through custom 3D animation of the trench network Canadians dug by hand, helping secure the victory.

Today marks Vimy Ridge Day.
A moment that helped shape our country, and a chance to remember the people who stepped up when it mattered.

Workplace training builds knowledge. But it doesn't guarantee behaviour change.

The truth is - if there’s no opportunity to apply what was learned, and no follow-up to reinforce it, most of that learning disappears. It just doesn’t translate back into the work.

In this week’s episode of Wired to Work, Jess Chapman sits down with Meghan Morrison (Service NB) to unpack why training so often fails to lead to real change, and what it actually takes for learning to stick.

Often the real work in life (and business!) is staying open to the journey.

Not the polished or perfectly planned version. But the messy, unpredictable, say-yes-and-see-what-happens version.

Case in point: I met Mallory, a photographer from LA, through a random SXSW Reddit thread. She was already in Austin for the festival, and somehow that turned into her coming out to shoot my panel. Two total strangers, just saying yes, trusting blindly and seeing what happened.

One of the coolest things about SXSW is the potential for these random creative collisions. Finding like-minded collaborators and patterns in the static.

There were conversations with Matt Acosta and Lisa Normand - laughs with Kurt Benson, William, Alison and x … intriguing chats with x about his super cool startup just before Steven Spielberg hit the stage.

And at one point, Jamie Lee Curtis called herself a “manifestor”. And it reminded me how much of my entrepreneurial (and creative) journey has come from exactly this. Not from strategy decks and perfectly mapped paths, but from staying open. To people, to moments, to things that don’t look like “opportunities” at first.

This holds true for content creation too. Too many people get stuck trying to perfect something before they’ve even started. Fear gets in the way and stops them before they even begin.

But creativity (and life!) don’t work like that.

Creativity is courage. Discovery. Following threads. Acting and refining.

SXSW reminded me that some of the best things I’ve built never came from control. They came from saying yes, acting on a hunch, rolling with a feeling before it made sense.

Because the real work isn’t in having it all planned out - it’s being brave enough to stay open for the journey.

Fight. Flight. Freeze. Flock.

These are the four ways your brain responds to stress. And they show up at work more often than you think.

In this episode of Wired to Work, Jess Chapman breaks down what’s actually happening when you react instead of respond.. and why stress makes it harder to think clearly in the moment.

Jess explains:

• what’s happening in the brain when stress levels rise
• why the amygdala triggers fast, emotional reactions
• how the prefrontal cortex (“brain CEO”) gets disrupted
• the four stress responses: fight, flight, freeze, and flock
• why social threat at work feels as real as physical danger
• how chronic stress increases reactivity and reduces reasoning

She also shares four practical ways to handle these moments:

• how to identify what’s triggering the reaction
• how trust lowers emotional intensity
• what to do when someone is reacting in real time
• how to reduce uncertainty and create psychological safety

If you’ve ever thought “Why did that escalate so quickly?” or found yourself reacting in ways you didn’t intend, this episode will give you a clearer way to understand and manage those moments at work.

Every year I leave Austin thinking the same thing: why did it take me so long to get here?

South by Southwest has this rare ability to pull you out of the day-to-day and drop you into rooms full of people thinking bigger, bolder, and further ahead. As a creative, it’s less of a conference and more of a reset.. a reminder of why the work matters.

And this year felt especially meaningful.

Double Barrel has been on quite a journey lately. From producing our own documentary (now streaming globally on Amazon Prime!) to diving back into original content through podcasting. We’ve been leaning hard into our creativity, and SXSW was a powerful signal: we’re on the right path.

I also had the privilege of sitting on a panel at Canada House, talking all things podcasting. A space we’ve been investing in deeply over the past year.

And then there were those surreal, pause-you-in-your-tracks moments: hearing from Steven Spielberg, Jamie Lee Curtis, Vince Gilligan, and Rhea Seehorn. Creative powerhouses, each in their own way reminding us what it means to stay sharp, curious, and committed to the craft.

It’s the year of the Fire Horse, folks. Big things are coming.

Grateful. Energized. Ready for what’s next.

Here’s to an incredible 2026. ~ Roz

Podcasting exploded.
Now the real question is: what’s actually good? And how do you build audiences from scratch?!

Join our founder Roz this Friday at Canada House SXSW for a panel about The State of Podcasting, where we’ll be digging into the parts people don’t always talk about.

Yes, podcasting is now a multi-billion-dollar industry. And yes, the barriers to entry have basically collapsed.

But that also means the feed is more flooded than ever. The real convo now is about craft.

What separates signal from noise?
What does a great clip actually look like?
Where does AI help, and where does it flatten creativity?
And why in a world of infinite content, taste, talent, and editorial judgment matter more than ever.

We’ll also talk about the next shift already underway:
Brands finally moving serious dollars into creator-led media… and why many of them still don’t know how to do it well.

Joining Roz on stage:

William Johnson — Founder,
Kurt Benson — Founder & CEO,

📍 Canada House at SXSW — Central District Brewing, Austin
🕒 Friday, March 13 | 3:30–4:00 PM

If you’re in Austin, come by. Let’s talk about what podcasting becomes next.

When your work is changing the game, it deserves a leading role. We’re honoured to help bring this story to light.

Double Barrel recently had the privilege of supporting the Indigenous Prosperity Foundation, NACCA, and DMZ on Launchpad: a new, free Indigenous-led entrepreneurship program created to uplift early-stage founders across Canada. Our team produced the capstone promo video and packaged more than 6 hours of educational content into a cohesive and accessible learning experience.

Working alongside these inspiring organizations, we helped translate their vision into a branded package that’s culturally grounded, visually engaging, and built to spark confidence in the next generation of Indigenous entrepreneurs.

Launchpad includes 12 self-paced chapters covering business development, leadership, financial readiness, digital skills, marketing, and sustainable growth. Over the next four years, it will support 2,000 Indigenous entrepreneurs, helping them move from inspiration to action.

We were deeply honoured by this generous feedback from Relay, on behalf of the Indigenous Prosperity Foundation:

“I extend our deepest thanks for your incredible contributions to the final production and the beautiful video of the Indigenous Launchpad for Entrepreneurs. Your creativity, precision, and dedication took this project across the finish line and brought it to life in a way that is both engaging and impactful. The expertise you infused into the visuals has made this tool truly meaningful for youth and early-stage Indigenous entrepreneurs across the country. We could not have achieved this without your talent and commitment.”

We’re grateful for the trust placed in us, and proud to support storytelling that champions empowerment, opportunity, and community-driven change.

If you know an aspiring Indigenous entrepreneur, please share this resource with them.

Madrid, you were magic. ✨

This week Roz attended the WeConnect International Europe & MENA Summit, and it was easily one of our most inspiring global events yet.

With attendees from 30+ countries, the energy was incredible — real conversations, new collaborations, and connections we can’t wait to grow.

And yes… the PARO gang reunion did not disappoint. Nothing better than catching up with old friends on the road. 💛

Thank you for an unforgettable experience!

✨ New Episode: CONTACT — Vinnie Adams ✨
When a mysterious message from UAP Colombia hit his inbox, British investigator Vinnie Adams () followed it all the way to the mountains outside Bogotá.

There, beneath La Peña de Juaica, he witnessed what locals have described for centuries — plasma-like lights dancing across the peaks.

WBENC 2025 in New Orleans was pure fire.

Roz hit the ground running the week of June 23 — connecting with powerhouse women, soaking up big ideas, and repping Double Barrel with style (and probably a beignet in hand).

The conference delivered: sharp conversations, inspiring keynotes, and real connections with brands and buyers that get it. And the surrounding events? Just as unforgettable.
Ghost tours in the French Quarter. Soul-stirring live music. Riverboats, roulette wheels, and the kind of late-night convos that turn into collaborations.

New Orleans showed up — and so did we.

Grateful for the community, the team at .centre and for the chance to be in the room where the future gets built.

See you next year!
