The first Egyptian pyramid to be built. The pyramid of Djoser or sometimes called the Step Pyramid of Djoser.

Perhaps not as famous as the great pyramid of Giza, but away from the crowds this pyramid is just as impressive and definitely worth visiting.

Cruising through the desert

I’ve traveled across deserts all over the world, and they all look very different. Some sandy, some rocky. And this one is very different again. It’s filled with white mushroom like structures. Tho other parts are more flat and it looks like the surface is covered with snow.

My uncle Javier wrote to me the other day, if only canyons could tell their tales.. and that is very true. Now I am thinking, if only these deserts could tell their tales…

After passing several police checkpoints and a short highway drive, we set off to embark on a long rough ride into the desert towards the Colored Canyon. These old Toyota Land Cruisers are not about luxury, but they keep on going for ever.

If only it could take us all the way to the end, but no, to get to the canyon we had to hike the last bit down, and also climb up again to get back to the car. While we left early in the morning and it was the beginning of winter, temperatures were still rising to 30+ degrees.

But once you get there, it’s all worth the trouble. The adventure makes it extra special and an unforgettable experience. The colores of the canyon, the heat of the day, it reminded me of the canyons in Arizona (USA). Although it may look similar, it has a different feel. Not better or worse, just different.

A short drive from Murcia you can find yourself in the middle of a little desert. The moon like landscape, the silence, the hot air… It gives you the feeling of being in outer space without having to close your eyes. It’s like a dream, but wait.. it is actually here, reality..

New heights (3/3)

After a long and tiring day, we went to bed at 9pm. Our sleeping bags were a bit too cold for where we were and my friend’s one was a bit too small. We used our backpacks and some little heater bags to be as comfortable as possible. But despite our efforts, we woke up every hour.

At 6:30AM, still exhausted, we looked at each other and decided that we might as well get up and start climbing to the top. But when we checked outside, we found out we were surrounded by thick white clouds, it was raining and we couldn’t see a thing. Given the circumstances, we decided it was not safe enough to climb up and we should packed our things to head back. But half an hour later when we were ready to leave and came outside it had completely cleared up! Being so close to the top, we did not want to fail our mission and changed our plans again and headed to the top after all.

The last part was steep and tiring, but as daylight was coming we could see better where we were going we got more and more excited. 2 hours later, climbing 500 meters over 1,4km, we finally reached our goal!! Exhausted, but full of energy we took in the moment and enjoyed the sunrise before it was time to go all the way down again.

Reaching Spain’s highest peak (mainland) was a very special moment for me and one I will never forget. I never thought much about climbing mountains, but maybe with a bit of training, I could go for a new personal height..

New heights (2/3)

The hike to the Mulhacen, you could do back and forth in 1 day, but it would be a though one. So we decided to sleep in Refugio Villavientos also because it would be an extra experience, add to the adventure and give as a beautiful sunset (photo 1). The refugio is 15 minutes away from the last climb to the top, so with an early start we would also get a beautiful sunrise on the top the next day.

But first we had to continued the trail to our sleeping spot. Going past mountain ridges where the clouds would wonder around us and made it feel like an ever changing landscape.

We were getting close to our sleeping spot, our legs got tired, we were dragging our feet with us and trying not to tumble. But after about 5,5 hours, climbing 1200 meters over 14km, we made it to the Refugio at 3222m. It is just a basic hut with a table and sleeping spots. No heating, no wifi nor fine dining, but it was our base camp (photos 3 and 4).

After we watched the sunset, we prepared for an early and cold night. And it would be one.. to be continued…

New heights (1/3)

A few weeks ago me and a friend headed to the highest peak of Spanish mainland (Mulhacen 3500m). For me a hike to a height which I had never done before. With little, but enough preparation went for it. We knew our route, sort of and the days before we practised some via ferrata and did some hikes. We knew it would be cold but we were not expecting snow.

On our last day of prepping we hiked to the Pico de la Carne (1809m, photo 2) with a total of 20km and climbing/descended 1200m, it was tough, but we were ready for our real adventure the next day.

We started our hike from the ski village Sierra Nevada. Not knowing there was a carpark close to our starting point, we hiked 2 hours over ski slopes and climbed 500 meters, for nothing 😅

From Mirador Virgen de las Nieves we walked to Pico Veleta and we could see the mountain we climbed the day before (photo 2). There were some people going to Pico Veleta that day, but as soon as we went past the mountain to continue to the Mulhacen it would come clear to us that we would be on own from that point on…

Autumn colours

Although Andalucia does not really have those typical forrests which completely change colour in autumn, I was happy to see the change here.

The south of Spain does get nice and green during the winter months, which makes it even more beautiful to go for a hike.

The dense pine tree forests around Malaga make the landscapes feel green and lush(ish) all year long. But once you get up close you will see how dry it is.

Hopefully this winter we will receive a decent amount of rain for our vegetation and to fill our water reserves.

You can find deserts all over the world in any shape or form. It doesn’t always have to be a soft sand covered area, but it could be a hard dried landscape like in this photo.
