What are you grateful for?
Gratitude, one of the most studied positive emotions...
What happens in the brain:
- medial prefrontal cortex: moral thinking, reward, bonding
- anterior cingulate cortex: emotional regulation and empathy
- dopamine and serotonin pathways: gratitude triggers the release of both, lifting mood
- hypothalamus: activates this area, which controls sleep, metabolism, and stress hormones
Physical effects:
- better sleep
- lower blood pressure
- stronger immune system
- less inflammation
The “upward spiral” mechanism:
Gratitude creates a self-reinforcing loop: it boosts dopamine → you feel motivated to notice more good things → more dopamine.
The key insight is that gratitude isn’t just a feeling — it’s a mental habit that changes how the brain focuses, remembers, and understands social situations.
Practicing it will change your life just like it has mine.
So, what are three things you are grateful for?
