Chapter 1.1 in Egypt: Buy a Sim Card
Once the plane lands, the first thing is heading to the hotel, and the immediate necessity is arranging transportation! Good news for friends heading to Hurghada or Cairo – you can use Uber!! No need to start off exhausted bargaining with taxi drivers. But to use Uber, you need a signal, so don't rely on Egypt's airport Wi-Fi!!! Essentially, you need a phone number that can receive "text" to access 5-15 minutes of free Wi-Fi! Even though my husband had roaming data, he still couldn't get a text! So basically, "Egyptian airports don’t offer free Wi-Fi" – remember!!!
I'd recommend that if you're traveling with two or more people, at least one person must have a roaming plan. If you want to save money or travel solo, opt for a short-term roaming plan and then purchase a sim card at the airport. This ensures that at least one person has internet access for calling an Uber or as a backup in case the sim card activation fails on the first day.
Speaking of which, Egyptian internet sim cards are super cheap (attached is an image). Egypt has 4 operators: Orange, WE, Vodafone, Etisalat. Online, it seems most people say Etisalat has the best signal, WE the worst. Later, I found this out online, but it was too late for me; we had already made our purchase. Heard that Vodafone activates relatively quickly, and Orange is probably the second fastest. Some lucky friends managed to use Vodafone right away.
At that time, we didn't think it through and directly chose the cheapest, WE. However, later on, we regretted not comparing different providers for two people. In reality, the prices for each provider's plan differ only slightly. I personally found WE's signal pretty good throughout Egypt, except in the desert. The only drawback is the lengthy activation time; online sources say it takes mostly 1-2 hours, but I seriously believe WE needs overnight to activate. So, it means don’t expect to buy a sim card and use it immediately to call an Uber. If someone really wants to take a risk, they can try purchasing Vodafone.
After purchasing the sim card, the staff will assist in setting it up for Android phones. For Apple, they said it would self-activate after some time. After a night, I turned on roaming, and the sim card was basically usable, so no issues. At that time, we were a bit afraid the sim card we bought wouldn’t work, but thankfully, everything was fine. Some on Chinese APP - Little Red Book mentioned that the purchased data in Egypt actually gets halved. I can't tell if it's half of the data I bought. For me I directly bought 40 GB, and if you're not continuously watching videos, I think it's fine for around 10 days.
The prices in the picture are for WE at Hurghada Airport in the Red Sea (in USD, EUR, EGP). At that time, I was too tired to take pictures of other providers' prices, but they were only slightly more expensive than this one. I looked online, and it seems prices in Cairo might be a bit higher. Honestly, prices in Egypt tend to fluctuate frequently. Here's a reference for everyone, and I also asked some friends exploring the Black and White Deserts about roaming prices in Taiwan; they saw the pictures I took and said Taiwan is more expensive.
