Photography Diary 2026-1 📖

Name: Common Crane / Eurasian Crane
Scientific Name: Grus grus
Family: Gruidae
Location: Europe, Asia, especially Estonia, Finland, Germany, Poland, and wetlands across Eurasia
Habitat: Wetlands, marshes, lakesides, agricultural fields, open grasslands

Background story:
I was driving toward Nõva–Põõsaspea, enjoying the quiet road and the peaceful evening light. The forest felt calm, almost empty, like time had slowed down for a while.

Then I noticed two Common Cranes standing in the field.
I stopped the car and watched them from a distance. They were calm, moving slowly, completely at home in the silence of nature. One of them walked into the golden light, and that was the moment I captured.

Sometimes the best photographs come from unexpected stops on a quiet road.

It wasn’t just about the bird or the photo — it was about that peaceful moment on the way to Põõsaspea, when nature quietly shared a small part of its world with me.

Birds Info: White Stork
Scientific name: Ciconia ciconia

White Stork is a large, long-legged bird that is known for its striking white plumage and black wing feathers.

The White Stork is a migratory bird that breeds in Europe, western Asia, and parts of North Africa. Estonia is one of the countries where White Storks can be found during their breeding season, which typically begins in April or May.

It's not clear exactly when the White Stork was first found in Estonia, as the species has likely been present in the region for thousands of years. However, the bird has long been an important cultural symbol in Estonia and other parts of Europe, and has been studied extensively by scientists and birdwatchers.

White Storks primarily feed on small animals like insects, worms, and frogs, but they will also eat small mammals and birds if they are available. During their breeding season, White Storks build large nests made of sticks and other materials, which they use to raise their chicks.

The White Stork is considered to be a species of least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which means that it is not currently at risk of extinction. However, like many other migratory birds, the White Stork faces a number of threats, including habitat loss, hunting, and collisions with power lines and other man-made structures.
