This is my result for episode two. Photograph a pet and his owner, they said. One hour. I would only get to know „my“ pet and it’s owner when the door of the studio opens and the time starts. As practice, I tried to visualize as many animals I could the evening before, making sketches of some ideas. My brain covered everything from horses to a goldfish, but somehow a lizard wasn’t part of my internal slideshow. But it was useful anyway, because I already had visualized all different sorts of placement for an animal of that size, hands, shoulder, head, and so on.
So there they were, Stefano and Squartaldo, and the clock was ticking. Of those 60 minutes, I spent the first 20 minutes talking to my subjects, getting to know them. Because without a story, I don’t know *what* to photograph, I don’t *want* to photograph. I don’t care for pictures that are just pretty. Then Stefano told me he used to have a phobia of lizards, until a friend convinced him otherwise, to give the little dragon a chance. So this was about overcoming fear, this was about becoming best friends forever with your former nightmares. But how to show it? He had a lizard tattoo on his arm, so one idea might have been to put the dragon there. Didn’t even try it. In the beginning I was a bit stuck with mere aesthetics, thinking about how Stefanos skin would make a good backdrop for Squartaldo. Looked good but it wasn’t enough, didn’t tell too much of a story, I was still missing something. Because to me, by overcoming his fear, by befriending the little dragon, Stefano *became* the dragon. So I looked around and when I noticed Federicas top, I thought to myself „@ #?€ yeah“. I took some more shots without the shirt, already contemplating about how to get him to wear that, wondering if he would agree. And here we go again: Without amazing people, we are nothing as photographers. He put it on and he killed it.
Also a million thanks for excellent support to Federica , for doing an wonderful job with the reflector, translating and finally: giving up that spikey top you were wearing!
