On June 20, 2026, Switzerland witnessed one of the most extreme weather days in recent history. The country had been locked in a brutal heatwave, with temperatures soaring to 35.7°C in Schaffhausen—a new June record.
In the middle of the night, a violent thunderstorm tore through major cities, bringing chaos in its wake. More than 15,000 lightning strikes were recorded across the country in just one night. Golfball-sized hail hammered buildings and cars, and powerful gusts of wind ripped through streets, smashing trees and tearing branches from their roots. In Zurich, the storm disabled tram lines, grounded buses, and even disrupted flights at the airport. Several people were injured as falling branches and toppled trees struck pedestrians and vehicles.
