These bugs are a marvel of biblical proportions!

Brood X is the largest brood of 17-year cicadas. This brood is found in three separate areas centering around Pennsylvania and northern Virginia, Indiana, and eastern Tennessee. The largest emergence of Brood X appears as adults only once every 17 years. The timing is in relation to the natural growth cycles of trees. While underground, the cicada nymphs pick up on the clues from the sap of the trees on when it's the best time to emerge. These alien-like bugs are no threat to humans and provide a feast to local wildlife such a birds, possums and raccoons as well as fertilizer for the forests from which they emerge.

Harlequin Bug | Murgantia histrionica

Despite their gorgeous coloring, these beauties are a beast for farmers and gardeners. As a true bug, it uses sucking mouthparts to extract juices from plants, often brassicas such as kale and mustard greens. 🥬

This is a mating pair. The intense reverse coloration of the males and females earned it its name. (Differentiation of males and females is called sexual dimorphism.) The coloring serves as a signal to predators of its toxicity.

A Houseplant PSA/Infomercial:

Houseplant owners dealing with gnats!

So you got a few houseplants, and then a few more. You were enjoying the bliss of your indoor jungle, then it happened.

Gnats started showing up. Tiny little buggers who love flying around your face and ears.

Many people purchase the yellow sticky traps. These traps are ugly, potentially dangerous, prone to catching unintended targets like your dog’s fur and don’t deal with the root cause of the problem. Bugs laying eggs in wet soil.

Fungus gnats lay eggs in moist soil and multiply quickly. I’ve seen many people get into houseplants enthusiastically and then toss all their plants due to the gnats.

There’s an easy, natural way to prevent this cycle and the life cycle of fungus gnats in your home.

Summit Mosquito Bits 🦟

Yes, those donuts you throw in backyard puddles when you know mosquitos are about to get bad are an amazing solution to your indoor bug issue.

The product is tiny bits of corn coated with a special bacteria that targets the larva of gnats and mosquitos. How cool is that?!

All you need to do is soak some bits in water to make a “tea” and then water your plants with that. The eggs in the soil won’t hatch and the adults will die off on their own in about 2 weeks. Life cycle broken, problem solved.

Tawny Emperor | Asterocampa clyton

The tawny emperor, is a species of brush-footed butterfly. It is native to North America, especially the eastern half from Canada to northern Mexico. The tawny emperor should not be mistaken for a very similar Asterocampa butterfly, the hackberry emperor, which can be distinguished by the white spots near the front of its wings.

Rosy Wolf Snail | Euglandina rosea

The rosy wolfsnail or the cannibal snail, is a species of medium-sized to large predatory air-breathing land snail, a carnivorous terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusk in the family Spiraxidae. This species is a fast and voracious predator, hunting and eating other snails and slugs. The rosy wolfsnail was introduced into Hawaii in 1955 as a biological control for the invasive African land snail, Achatina fulica. This snail is responsible for the extinction of an estimated eight native snail species in Hawaii. This has caused the snail to be added to the IUCN’s top 100 most invasive species.
