Exactly 2 years ago today I crossed the Chestoa Bridge (or the bridge over the Nolichucky River) near Uncle Johnny’s Hostel in Erwin, TN. I couldn’t imagine at the time that in about 5 months that bridge would be destroyed by catastrophic floodwaters from the Nolichucky River following the remnants of Hurricane Helene. It’s still hard to watch that video without thinking about the destruction caused and the pain and suffering brought about by that storm.
Only bonus of it is an awesome cameo by Ms. Janet Hensley

It’s hard to believe, but we’ve reached the season finale of Season 2. This season has taken us across rugged miles, into unforgettable stories, and deep into the heart of what it means to hike, not just the trails, but the journeys that shape us. From early morning starts to hard-earned summits, from quiet moments in the woods to powerful conversations with those who live this lifestyle every day, it’s all led us here. In this final episode, we’re taking a moment to reflect, to celebrate, and to look ahead to what’s next. Whether you’ve been with us since the beginning or just joined along the way, we’re glad you’re here for this one. Let’s hit the trail one more time this season ... It was a great day out on the Appalachian Trail today conducting trail, privy, and lean-to assessment with Cassie Spear and Hunter Law.
We made Barren Ledges our lunch stop, where we enjoyed beautiful views which faded in and out, blinded by clouds and even snow squalls at moments.
The trail was in pretty good shape with less snow and ice than I expected, even at 2,000 feet of elevation. Unfortunately, we did find some significant damage to the roof at Long Pond Stream lean-to that will certainly need to be repaired asap. I’m eager for more access roads to the 100 Mile Wilderness to open up so we can do more assessing and start trail maintenance.
