In loving memory of Rodney Charters, ASC, CSC, NZCS.
Through the stories Rodney shared with us, we came to know the remarkable journey that shaped his life and work. It began in New Zealand, in his father’s darkroom and 16mm short films, and took him from Auckland’s Elam School of Fine Arts to London’s Royal College of Art, then to documentary work in Canada, and eventually to Los Angeles. It was a journey defined by curiosity and a lifelong devotion to telling stories through images.
Known for his work on 24, Shameless, and Going in Style, Rodney brought exceptional artistry and a deep understanding of storytelling to his craft. His enthusiasm for filmmaking was matched by his generosity in sharing knowledge and encouraging others to develop their own creative voices.
Over the past few years, we at NANLUX have been honored to work alongside Rodney and learn from him. His guidance and support have meant a great deal to our team. At trade shows, industry events, and in our everyday conversations, he brought warmth, enthusiasm, and a willingness to share his experience. His dedication to his work and generosity toward others will remain an inspiration to us.
We are grateful to have shared a small part of his remarkable journey. We will strive to honor his legacy by carrying forward his spirit of generosity, supporting fellow filmmakers, and sharing his passion for the craft with the wider industry.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him.
Thank you, Rodney, for your artistry, your kindness, and everything you shared with us. You will be deeply missed.
