We spent the next two days exploring the imperial city of Hue. Until the war, this was the seat of power in Vietnam since 1802 when Nguyễn Phúc Ánh took control of Vietnam and proclaimed himself emperor. Fortunately, a good bit of the city still survives today, though much of it was destroyed during bombing campaigns as a result of the war.

We left Phong Nha and headed down the coast, stopping along the in the village of Vinh Moc to visit the tunnels build during the war. The tunnels were a last-ditch effort to simply stay alive. An entire village lived and worked for months underground in a series of 3 levels, which were relatively bomb proof from continuing air raids. From here, we headed to the former DMZ, separating North from South and spent some time at a museum dedicated to the cleanup and documentation of UXO (un-exploded ordinance). From here we continued on to the imperial city of Hue.

Day 5 in Phong Nha. We started our day with a cave tour through one of the largest cave systems in the world, known as Paradise Cave. Our tour lasted for well over 4 hours, walking through massive caverns. We spent the afternoon riding around in a vintage Jeep for a ride along an original section of the Ho Chi Minh Trail, and spent the night at Phong Nha Farm Stay.

1 year ago today:

We found ourselves in the Quang Binh province of Vietnam, biking down this path to find a little place called Phong Nha Farmstay and the ever elusive 'cold beer'. Little did we know, but we were some of the first tourists to venture out on our own in this area. We found it sure enough, and when we met the Australian bloke who runs the farmstay , I knew we'd come to the right place. I could not have asked for a happier time.
