Thulavarsham or should I say Thalavarsham 🤭 (iykyk)
🌧️
While it is monsoon OUT Diwali IN for most parts of the country, Kerala prepares for its next bout of rainfall- this time from the Northeast Monsoon.
Yep, Kerala is one of the few states where the rain gods strike twice in a year! It happens during the month of Thulam (mid October-mid November) hence Thula- varsham. This monsoon rarely travels light, usually accompanied by lighting and thunder.
Two years ago while climbing Paithalmala (the highest peak in Kannur) the rain was unyielding and I was cussing at my poncho while I saw a local pass by with banana leaf on head, shielding himself from the tantrums of the rain, utterly unperturbed and surprisingly a lot dryer than I was!
As he crossed me and walked on ahead all I could see was his well postured back, a torch dangling from his elbow groove and his mundu folded and tucked uptil his knees exposing his stringy thoran like legs. That image immediately brought a smile to my face and stayed with me. I knew it would be something I painted and here we are 2 years later…

Taking Robert Henri’s advice to be a sketch hunter moving through life as I find it anywhere, everywhere; to see and understand has been a revelation! I usually journaled with words but since I took to painting, a quick sketch a day keeps the anxiety away. Much of my completed pieces come from these stray, rough sketches of the goings-on in my mind (you may recognise a few rough beginnings from the carousel)
✏️
As Robert Henri preaches- Whether you are a scribbler or a rambler I urge you to take sometime out this weekend to paint or draw a sketch of what moves you , your pleasure in the thing you see or wish to record. Let me know how you get on?

June has passed us by and it is starting to get wild! Birthday month, monsoon onset, pork belly once, pork belly twice, merry ferry rides and much neighbourhood exploration was done each weekend, the most yet since we moved to Goa…looking forward to the upcoming trekking months once the rains have soothed our green landscapes.
The illustration I had to paint is a scene from this year’s São João celebrations, a monsoon festival celebrated in these parts since the 16th century. We enjoyed the floats and feni from a secret spot overlooking the river’s bends (see last few videos on this carousel), all in all very grateful for June!

April was head down bum up busy with research work and less of painting work but foraging for inspiration was a constant.
I believe there are periods to create, to recycle, to eradicate, to transform and to simply gather.
April was a month of gathering; family gatherings with the brother after 6 long years, gathering mangoes for the first aamras of the season, gathering memories of aimless moonlit nights (because it is too hot to wander when ☀️ is at play) and gathering names of plant species for a future garden.
☕️
The illustration is a delicious spread of what our local gaddo does best- enjoying an early morning breakfast at the gaddo with the boys.

March has been all about continuing to train my eyes to see the world as if I was painting it and damn is it challenging! The greats advise there is no better or more truthful way to learn.
I have been quick sketching and painting from life, focusing on it as it goes by until I can tolerate the heat no more.
Art is truly transformative, both within me and on my canvas so it gives me a reason to persist.
🍋
Away from the canvas, the good things this month have been about enjoying spring (feels like summer) with its abundance of flower, fruit and liquor, doses of wisdom on the walls, home cooking and letting loose while jamming with loved ones.

Today marks a potent combination of the union of two beloved phenomena- spring and colour! Both have such a deep hold over me.

Springtime for the plantdom is all about harvesting light. This light is then magically (and scientifically) transformed to emanate colour, also a form of light with its precise wavelengths that stimulates and intoxicates. A purpose that sounds deeply fulfilling to me. Such a balanced give and take.

Goethe suggests, “Colours are the deeds and sufferings of light” of which we go ahead and make infinite meaning out of.

As spring progresses into the seasons that follow may you have the perception to take notice and let colours nourish your being. Happy Holi!
