🌊🛶 Summer on the Water with Songhees Tours 🛶🌊

It has been an incredible and busy summer at Songhees Tours!
We have had the privilege of welcoming visitors, locals, and our wonderful tourism partners out on the water and along our lands for Cultural Walking and Canoe Tours.
This summer, we have shared many special moments with our guests, including VIP experiences where we can spend a little more time connecting, sharing stories, language, history, and culture.🪶
One of the highlights has been getting out on the water and experiencing the beauty of our homelands from the canoe on the Salish Sea.

We are so grateful for all of our guests, partners, and community members who continue to support Songhees Tours. Your support allows us to continue sharing and grow while we share Lekwungen history, stories, and connections to these lands and waters.

A special thank you to Destination Greater Victoria and Greater Victoria Harbour Authority for coming on tour with us again this year and continuing our great partnership over all these years. 🙌

Here are a few photos from some of the special moments we have shared this summer. Thank you for being part of our journey! ❤️

We have an announcement of designation✨️📣
Last week Songhees Tours received the Authentic Indigenous Certification through our incredible partners at Indigenous Tourism BC!

The Authentic Indigenous designation recognizes Indigenous-owned businesses that go above and beyond to revitalize and protect Indigenous cultures, languages, and Traditional Territories in B.C. This means visitors can engage with Indigenous cultures meaningfully and respectfully, knowing their visit helps preserve traditions, empower local communities, and protect the environment.

We already hold the designation for Indigenous Owned.
The Indigenous-owned designation is awarded to tourism businesses that are at least 51% owned and operated by First Nations or Indigenous individuals or organizations. This designation assures visitors that their choice to support these businesses directly contributes to successful and self-determined First Nations and Indigenous participation in the B.C. tourism industry.

həyšxʷq́ə, (thank you) to our long standing partners at ITBC for supporting us over the years. 🪶

There is a growing demand for authentic Indigenous tourism experiences, and we’re grateful to see the number of tour requests continue to grow each year. It means so much to have the opportunity to share our Lekwungen culture, language, history, and stories with visitors from near and far.

We are grateful to CBC Lite One Victoria for the opportunity to be part of their broadcast and to help showcase the importance and value of authentic Indigenous tourism.

Thank you for supporting Songhees Tours and for helping us share our story in a meaningful way.

We’re excited to share this great video featuring one of our valued Songhees Tours team members, Cultural Tour Guide Cyril Morris. His traditional name is wəqʷaqʷələq, and he has been a part of the Songhees Tours team since 2021.

Cyril is a proud member of the Lekwungen peoples, more specifically the Songhees Nation, and brings his knowledge, culture, and passion to every experience he shares with our guests. We are grateful to have him as an important part of our team.

A heartfelt thank you to The Wolf Beat for featuring Cyril and Songhees Tours on your show and for creating space to share our stories and culture.

We look forward to continuing to work together and sharing more meaningful stories in the future.
Həyšxʷq́ə! 🪶❤️

Building relationships begins with understanding the land and the stories it holds.

On July 9th, we welcomed employees from Pomerleau and ITC to join us through downtown Victoria’s Inner Harbour for our Cultural Walking tour named Xʷsəyq̓ əm. (Place of Mud)
We were able to show them the city through an Indigenous lens and tell them the history right beneath their feet.

We started with an indigenous style of introductions, a traditional welcome to Lək̓ʷəŋən lands, introduction to the 7 Signs of Lək̓ʷəŋən and then we shared stories of land, history and culture.

On every tour we create a safe space for guests to ask questions and have cross cultural sharing.

We are grateful to partner with organizations like Pomerleau that take the time to learn from the communities where they work and help create meaningful connections through shared experience, learning, and dialogue.

Thank you for walking with us. 🪶

Have you seen photos online or have heard people talking about Tribal Canoe Journeys and wanted to know what it is??

Every summer, Indigenous Nations from across the Pacific Northwest come together for Tribal Canoe Journeys—a powerful cultural tradition that brings communities together by canoe, following the ancestral waterways that have connected our peoples since time immemorial.🛶

This year's destination is Nisqually, where hundreds of pullers, skippers, singers, drummers, youth, Elders, and families will gather to celebrate our cultures, strengthen relationships, and honour the teachings passed down through generations.

Tribal Journeys is about so much more than reaching a destination. It is about respect, protocol, perseverance, healing, and unity. Every paddle stroke carries our ancestors' teachings, our languages, our songs, and our shared responsibility to keep our cultures strong for future generations.🪶

As canoes arrive, each Nation respectfully requests permission to come ashore, reminding us that we are all guests on another Nation's territory and that respect is at the heart of our traditions.

Wishing safe travels to every canoe family making the journey to Nisqually this year. May the waters be kind, the winds be with you, and may your songs continue to carry the strength and resilience of your people.🌊

🪶 Hands up to all who paddle, sing, support, and participate. 🙌
