I was sent up to Kelowna for CBC on Sunday to cover the McDougall Creek Wildfire and although the flames had settled down by then, the smoke was incredibly thick and many evacuations were in place as crews fought to control the growth of the fire. Over the course of several days I was on assignment around Kelowna to capture stories of those that were evacuated, those that were volunteering their time and a city that, although experiencing devastating circumstances, were coming together to be there for each other and help lift each other up. Many evacuations are still in place and many have lost their homes. We are only starting to learn of what was lost and the effects the fire has had on the community. While there, I spoke to numerous families, volunteers and firefighters and my heart goes out to all of them. Thank you to those who allowed me to document and to hear your stories.
10 images from my time there -

1. kids bike to a local park to watch the helicopters come pick up loads of water to dump on the fires
2. firefighters eat dinner at one of the base camps served by Salvation Army Emergency response volunteers
3. a man waits to check into a hotel after being evacuated with a just a few suitcases and his dog.
4. Premier David Eby meets with West Kelowna fire chief Jason Brolund
5. Volunteers unload a busload full of donated towels, blankets, and supplies for those that were evacuated
6. A fireman goes over notes at a camp while waiting to head out in the morning
7. A couple is evacuated with their dogs and spends the nights at a nearby strip mall parking lot.
8. Water helicopters make passes late into the evening at a lake in West Kelowna picking up water and dropping it on the fires.
9. Rodney cooking up eggs and hashbrowns for the morning crews. He runs this particular base camp's meals and volunteers his time from 6am to late at night helping cook and prepare over a 1000 meals a day for the crews coming and going.
10. Signs left in windows of homes that were on evacuation orders and then downgraded to alerts. Crews pass back and forth on these streets each day heading to where they are fighting the fires.

A handful of images that stood out to me while on assignment for CBC Vancouver

Although I haven't been there for the full year and am mostly a casual/fill in for the very talented (have a look at his work if you haven't already!); I have loved every single minute of my time while there and have had the opportunity to document some incredible stories in and around Vancouver. I've wanted to get into photojournalism for some time now and I can honestly say it's exceeding my expectations and starting to work for was one of my definite highlights of 2022.

Here's to 2023 and the stories yet to be told.

Alan Law had asked me a number of times to do a podcast for This is Reportage and I always found an excuse not to.. truth be told, I was terrified! I finally decided to be brave and just do it. I listened to it while driving around today and since I only cringed a few times, and I'm actually quite proud of myself for getting over that fear of speaking in public (a podcast counts, right!?); I'm sharing it. Thanks Alan for making it somewhat easy and dare I say, fun!

Honoured to chat to the fab Justine Boulin Photography for episode 103 of the Podcast! Based in Canada, Justine has won 9 Reportage Awards and 2 Story Awards from us, and was in our Top 50 Photographers Worldwide for 2020. She was also a judge for us right back in Collection 2; something which she talks about on the episode today, as well as many other things, including:

*approaching each wedding without any preconceived ideas or judgements,
*why her very first wedding was such a good one,
*a 21km run as her first date with her husband,
*why less gear can be a good thing,
*how having a heart attack gave her a new perspective on life,
*and much more...

As always, we have lots of different ways to listen. Listen on:

There are so many images I could have shared for a preveiw - for one of the first weddings back with actual guests and dancing (disclaimer: outside!) and even a champagne aerialist - they know how to throw a party! Congrats again you two - I was so honored to document your day. So many more to come - I can not wait to share your full story!

So many I want to share from Taryn & Nate's wedding this past weekend at the most stunning location off of the sunshine coast .offleash - a morning swim and coffee with the rising sun, emotional first looks and vows, a ceremony on the rocks and the most amazing dinner by .nomadic.kitchen with stunning views all around. I can't wait to share the full story of their day. For now a little handful 💕.
