⛵ Ships to Shore ⛵🇯🇵 Friday's sunset and Japan's tall ship "Kaiwo Maru" glowing magically with string lights, looking like a scene from "Once Upon A Time" in Storybrooke ✨

I actually went to Garry Point Park to capture the Full Flower Moon rising behind this majestic tall ship but my plans were thwarted by thick clouds in the southeast and the moon was a no-show.

Looking over the mouth of the Fraser River, the Salish Sea, and beyond to Valdes Island, Cassidy (Nanaimo Airport, YCD), and mountain ranges on Vancouver Island.

"Ships to Shore: Kaiwo Maru at Garry Point Park in historic Steveston Village, May 2–3, 2026 from 10:00am-5:00pm. This free family festival invites visitors to view the renowned Kaiwo Maru, enjoy dockside entertainment, and celebrate Richmond’s storied maritime past." ~ City of Richmond

Did you know... the floats and gangways from the Imperial Landing docks were temporarily relocated here to Garry Point Park for this event?

⛵️ Tokyo Drift 💦 The Kaiwo Maru is now in Steveston for "Ships to Shore" this weekend. It's been 9 long years since this vessel has visited British Columbia. These photos are from an overcast day in 2017 when this ship was departing from Garry Point Park in Richmond, BC.

The Kaiwo Maru will only visit Steveston, British Columbia, during its 2026 North American voyage. It is confirmed as the sole port of call in North America, docking at Garry Point Park for the Ships to Shore festival from May 2–3, 2026. A limited number of tickets will be available for people to board and explore the vessel.

Can anyone tell me why they chose Steveston as their destination?

After departing Steveston on May 6, it will sail directly to Honolulu, and then return to Kobe, Japan, with no additional stops in British Columbia.

This tall ship is one of the largest in the world, 182 feet high by 361 feet long. The King of the Sea. It took this ship a month to cross the Pacific Ocean just to get here.

The Kaiwo Maru is typically stationed at the National Institute for Sea Training in Yokohama, Japan, where it serves as a sail training vessel operated by the Japan Agency of Maritime Education and Training for Seafarers (JMETS). While it is registered in Tokyo and frequently visits ports like Kobe and Yokohama, its official home port and base of operations is Yokohama.

🌞 Hot Town, Summer in Vancity 🏖
Who’s ready for some serious beach vibes?

Flashback to that golden evening sunshine on Kitsilano Beach when the mercury hit a perfect 28°C (82.4°F).

Gazing across the fenced Kitsilano Pool, over English Bay and Kits Beach, past the Boathouse Restaurant patio (which Hawksworth is taking over this year), the lifeguard station, one of the graceful weeping willows, and all the way to the West End skyline.

WARNING 🚨 STAY OUT OF THE WATER!!! Yesterday a great white shark was spotted off the coast of Kitsilano Beach. Vancouver marine biologists believe the warm winter has brought the transient sharks into English Bay. They hunt seals, sea lions and other cetaceans. To avoid being mistaken for prey, everyone must stay off our beaches and out of the water until late fall when the water has cooled down. Heavy fines will be issued for anyone who breaks the rules. Only SeaSide Signs, friends and family are allowed to use the beaches this spring and summer. For scientific purposes, of course. Thank you for your cooperation and stay safe out there.

Sources say this photo was captured by marine biologists who wish to remain anonymous. Taken at Kits Beach in Kitsilano, Vancouver, Beautiful British Columbia, Canada ~ March 31, 2026 🇨🇦

🍳🥓🥞 More Ovaltine, Please! ☕ One of Vancouver’s oldest continuously operating restaurants known for it’s preserved 1940’s charm. The Ovaltine Cafe is a classic diner on East Hastings Street in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside (DTES) neighbourhood. Known for its ultra-affordable, hearty meals, and role as a community fixture.

Inside the diner, the traditional decor has barely changed over the decades... a long Formica counter lined with fixed red vinyl stools, cozy booths, mirrors, varnished woodwork, and art deco details. A rare survivor of Vancouver's mid-20th-century diner culture, largely unaltered amongst the evolving city around it.

This cafe opened in 1942 inside the 114-year-old Afton Hotel building (built in 1912 and originally an apartment building).

Fun fact: In 2018, the British newspaper “The Telegraph” named the Ovaltine one of the "50 greatest cafes on Earth," praising its retro furnishings and vintage feel.

📸 Take A Picture 🙌🏼 ’cause I won’t remember. Last April, on a busy Saturday night on Vancouver’s Granville Strip, I was out with my Canon, people watching and street-scouting. It was packed with people hanging out and enjoying the nightlife.

I came across this unobstructed view of the iconic “Studio” sign when a stranger (.henriksen) walked into frame and sat on the pink cement barrier. I asked if she minded me photographing her and she was cool with it.

Moments later, her friend (calistakrusel) joined and suddenly I had two models! I sent them the shots as thanks but completely forgot to post them. I have mountains of unshared photos in my collection.

My eye is always drawn to this historic sign and its beautiful red cursive neon letters (even when it needs servicing).

This section of Granville Street was known as Theatre Row for its cluster of movie theaters, vaudeville/opera houses, and elaborate neon signs. Vancouver had one of the world’s highest neon concentrations in the 1950s.

The Studio sign was built in 1950 for the Studio Theatre (by Neon Products, now owned by Jimmy). It became the Studio Nightclub in 2000 and closed permanently in June 2025. The building is now for sale.

🌞Winter Sun 🏢⛰️ Yesterday's golden view of the last rays of sun kissing English Bay Beach and high-rise buildings in the West End of Vancouver. From the historic English Bay Bathhouse to the Inushuk. In the distance, Upper Lonsdale homes in North Vancouver on the lower slopes of Mount Fromme.

💚 Fog Horns & Solar Storms 💚 Tuesday night's Aurora Borealis over Black Mountain, Mount Strachan & Hollyburn Mountain (aka Cypress Mountain) in West Vancouver. This auroral arc stretched over our North Shore Mountains from Bowen Island to past Mount Seymour, pulsing in the sky like a neon music graph.

The sound of fog horns filled the air and the rolling fog covered the foothill at north end of Burrard Inlet, the city lights of West Van not visible.
