You can’t tell every part of a story in one video. That’s like packing for a three-day trip and bringing your entire wardrobe because you just might need everything. 😶

A business may have years of history, several services, a passionate founder, and dozens of reasons people should care, all of which it wants to squeeze into a single video of limited length.

Sure, all of those things matter, but giving them equal attention can leave the viewer unsure what to take away, and even overwhelmed. 😶‍🌫️

This is where some of the real creative work happens. We have to decide which part of the story serves the purpose of this particular video, what helps bring that story to life, and what might be better explored somewhere else.

Leaving something out doesn’t mean it isn't worth telling. Sometimes, it means giving that part of the story the space it deserves in another piece of content rather than squeezing everything into one.

At BIGSIX MEDIA, telling a story well isn’t just about knowing what to include. It’s also about knowing what to leave out. 🤗

Did you know that the same story can become very different videos?

Yes, it doesn’t always have to be a ‘one-size-fits-all’ situation.

Here’s why:
When a business needs a video for its website, a social media campaign, a presentation, or an event, the usual option is to shoot one video and use it everywhere. After all, the story is the same, so why not? 🤷‍♀️

But think about the person watching. Someone visiting your website might be trying to understand what you do and whether you're the right fit for them. Someone scrolling through social media may have no idea who you are, and might have stumbled upon your video while doomscrolling (in this scenario, you have only a few seconds to convince them to stay or scroll past).

And someone watching at an event might already know your organization but need to see a different side of its work.

Those are three different situations, and the video needs to account for that. What we lead with, what we show, how much context we provide, and what we want the viewer to remember can all change. 🤔

This doesn’t mean we need to invent a new story for every platform. It means understanding what the story needs to do in each setting and making creative decisions accordingly.

At BIGSIX MEDIA, we’re not just thinking about how a video will look on screen. We’re thinking about who’s watching, what brought them there, and what we want them to take away from the experience. 😉

Our goal is to make what matters to you matter to someone else too. And the secret lies in how we tell your story. 💗

The funny thing about being a storyteller and a video producer is that, over time, you start to realize that not everything needs to be said. 😅

Sometimes, a person’s expression tells you more than a paragraph could. Sometimes it is the way someone pauses before answering a question, the items in the room they are sitting in, or even the sounds in the background.

That is something producing video has taught me to appreciate.

As someone who enjoys writing, my instinct can sometimes be to find the right words. But working with video has taught me that a story can live in so many other places too. 👌

And that’s what makes the combination so interesting. Writing makes me think about the story I am trying to tell, while video gives me so many more ways to tell it.

And this... is the “sweet spot” I mentioned in last week's post. 😂

One thing I have carried with me from writing into video production is the constant question: “What is the story here?” 🤔

I go beyond looking at what is happening and ask why someone with no connection to the story should care about it, and how we can make them care.

It enables me to ask: Who is this about? What’s their vision for this project? What are their struggles? What should the audience understand or feel by the time the story is over?

Those questions are useful whether I am sitting with a notebook or sitting in an edit suite. And I think that is where the two sides of what I do meet.

Writing has taught me to pay attention to the story. Producing has taught me to think about how that story can actually be brought to life through images, sound, people and all the other things that make up a video. 📹

As a writer and “video guy,” I enjoy having both ways of looking at a story.

One helps me find it, and the other helps me show it. 🤩

I think one of the most important questions for any creative business is, “What’s next?” 🤷‍

Not because what you are doing now isn’t working, but because standing still for too long can be just as risky as moving too quickly.

At BIGSIX MEDIA, we are always thinking about how we can get better at what we do, what we can try differently, and what kinds of stories we want to tell next.
Some ideas work, some don’t. Some “business experiments” become part of how we work, while others teach us what not to do again. 😂

Running a creative company is not just about having the creative part down pat. It also means making tough decisions about which projects to take, which ideas to explore, and sometimes simply asking, “What if we tried this?”

So, cheers to October. 🍻
Let’s see what’s next.

Happy new month!! 🥳 We made it to the 10th month.

Sometimes, you get so caught up in the flow of work that you move from one task to the next without really stopping to process any of it.

You can’t run a business on fumes. 😶‍🌫️

One thing that helps when I feel that pressure is putting my thoughts on paper. 📜
I write whatever comes to mind. It could be about the business, or an idea that’s been sitting in my head. Some nights, I’m simply trying to make sense of something that’s been bothering me.

Getting those thoughts out of my head and onto the page makes them feel a little easier to deal with, and I think that is probably why I’ve always been drawn to storytelling.

As a “video guy”, I get to tell stories visually through BIGSIX MEDIA, but I also enjoy sitting down and writing things out for myself.

Yes, there are definitely some sweet spots where these two worlds meet, but that’s a conversation for another day. 😂

I wish you an amazing month full of peace and joy! 🤩

Loving the creative side of your business does not mean you should ignore the business side. 😶

You might have a brilliant idea, but bringing it to life can be challenging on a small budget. In times like these, you have to ask practical questions:
What can we produce within the budget? What does the client actually need? And which parts can we tweak without compromising the story?

These questions matter because, in the creative business, your client’s vision takes centre stage.
Sometimes, the most creative solution isn't the one you would choose with unlimited time and money. It is the one that takes the limitations and finds a way to make them work.

At BIGSIX MEDIA, we work somewhere between the creative idea and figuring out how to actually make it work.
This balance is part of what makes running a creative company interesting. 👌

I think we have become a little too obsessed with making everything shorter.

A lot of content is competing for people’s attention, and yes, sometimes a 30-second video is exactly what you need, but sometimes the story you are trying to tell needs a little more room to breathe. 🤔

If you are trying to explain something complicated, introduce people to an organization, tell a meaningful story, or make someone understand why something matters, rushing through it because you are afraid they might stop watching doesn't always make sense.

Sometimes, the right question is not, “How short can we make this?”
It is, “How much time would it take to tell this story or communicate this idea?” 🤷‍♀️

In my nine years producing videos with BIGSIX MEDIA, I have become increasingly conscious of this.

A good story should not be stretched unnecessarily, but it should not be squeezed into a smaller space just because shorter is supposed to be better.

Attention matters, but so does what you do with it. 😳

One thing I never want to lose, no matter how much BIGSIX MEDIA grows, is the chance to actually be involved in the work. 😉

I enjoy the conversations at the beginning of a project. I like seeing an idea take shape, being on set while we film, watching the team figure things out, and seeing the final piece come together.

Of course, parts of running a company have nothing to do with cameras or production. We have meetings, emails, planning, budgets, admin work, and all the things that keep the business moving. 🤗

But I still like staying close to the creative side of things because I did not start BIGSIX MEDIA just to run a business.

I got into it because I genuinely enjoy making things... And I hope I never get too far away from that. 👍

Nobody really tells you how much of running a media company involves solving problems you did not know existed. 😂

A location changes, a piece of equipment suddenly decides it has had enough, or an idea that looked perfect on paper suddenly does not work in the real world.

And somehow, everyone looks at you like, “So… what do we do now?” And the team works through it to bring the client’s vision to life. 👌

I think that is probably one of the things I enjoy most about this business. There is always something new to solve, and somehow, there is always a way to figure it out. 😊❤
