This is Luthie Lampa. She is a plant fanatic, mother of two sons, and the co-owner/operations manager of The Black Canary Espresso Bar in downtown Toronto.

Born and raised in Edmonton, AB, Luthie moved to Toronto in August 1999. She is now married and has two sons. Her oldest, Joshua, will be starting college in the fall, and her 4-year-old, Joaquin, loves Lego and dinosaurs. โ€œThey keep me busy!โ€ In her down time, you can find Luthie amongst her plants of about 75! Her love for foliage, in both collecting and growing, has been extremely rewarding. โ€œIt's been a lot of trial and error, but I love it!"

Sharing her love of the cafe culture, Luthie and her team have been serving traditionally made espresso and espresso based drinks to the community for over 10 years. Unfortunately, due to COVID and the lockdowns, Luthie recently had to shut down her second location at 329 Yonge Street. However, Luthie and her team are doing their best to pivot their way through the pandemic by converting the dine-in area at their 61 Sherbourne Street location into a plant and arts boutique. Combining her hobby and her business!

โ€Our main goal is to bring life back into the cafe. Adding some greenery and some artisanal products to the shop definitely does that.โ€

She hopes that someday soon, her customers will be able to stay, drink and chat once again.

Drop by The Black Canary and say hi to Luthie! The Black Canary Espresso Bar

Fun fact, I went to school for Film Production! This is a short film that I directed in my first year at Ryerson University. It was shot on 16mm film with sound added in post.
