A Big Thank You from Pittsburgh

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the Coin Photography Studio booth at the ANA World’s Fair of Money in Pittsburgh.

Whether you brought coins for us to photograph, stopped to see what we were doing, asked questions, shared stories about your collection, or simply came by to say hello—it was a pleasure meeting you.

We had a great time, photographed some remarkable coins, and had more great numismatic conversations than we could count.

One of the best parts of a show like the ANA isn’t just the coins—it’s the people behind them. Thank you for making our first ANA as an exhibitor such an enjoyable and memorable experience.

We hope to see many of you again at the next show.

Every World's Fair Of Money attendee faces the same problem.
There is simply too much to see.
Too many dealers.
Too many exhibits.
Too many lectures.
Too many great coins.
The challenge isn't finding something interesting.
The challenge is deciding what to spend your time on.
As I prepare for Pittsburgh, I'm already realizing that five days will disappear very quickly.
One moment you're setting up the booth.
The next moment you're packing everything back into cases.
That's part of the excitement.
You never know what coin, collector, or conversation is waiting around the next corner.

For those planning to have coins photographed during the show, it might be worth reaching out before WFOM arrives. The days tend to fill up surprisingly quickly.

I'll be at Booth 323 throughout the convention.

What's Your WFOM Strategy? As the show gets closer, I'm curious how experienced attendees approach the show.

Do you arrive with a detailed plan?

Or do you simply wander and see what happens?

This will be my first ANA show as an exhibitor, so I'm preparing for what I'm sure will be a busy and memorable week.

I'll be photographing coins throughout the show from Booth 323.

For those who are planning to have coins photographed during the show, I'd encourage reaching out ahead of time. Five days sounds like a long time until you start putting names on a calendar.

How did this coin ever get approved?
I've been researching the history of the Seated Liberty design, and one thing surprised me.
Not that people criticized it.....but how consistently they criticized it.
Beginning in the 1850s, art journals, magazine editors, and numismatists all seemed to notice the same problems. They complained about Liberty's twisted posture, impossible anatomy, awkward proportions, and even the eagle on the reverse.
One reviewer called the design:
"so badly drawn that it becomes perfectly ridiculous."
Another joked that Liberty had been trying to break her neck for fifty years.
Perhaps my favorite criticism came from a nineteenth-century numismatist who claimed Liberty's right leg wasn't actually attached to her body—it was simply "tied to her dress."

That leaves one lingering question.
How did this design make it all the way through the approval process? It's longer story you can read about in my Journal.

When you see this coin in the future, remember history doesn't just preserve great successes—it preserves great mistakes, too.

Coin Photography. Why didn't I know this was even a thing?
Because professional collection photography is still a niche within a niche.

Most collectors encounter photography through dealers, auctions and grading services, or even dive in themselves. Dealer and auction photography exists to help transact the coin; grading photography helps document it; Coin Photography Studio exists to go beyond that, helping collectors experience and present a collection they've worked hard to assemble.

With the ANA World's Fair of Money just around the corner, I can't help but wonder what great coins will find their way to Booth 323 this year.

Convenience. One of the greatest advantages of having your coins photographed at the ANA World's Fair of Money is simply convenience.

You're already at the show. Your coins are already with you—or perhaps you've just found something special on the bourse floor. Either way, you can bring them directly to Booth 323 and have them professionally photographed while you're there.

You don't need an appointment, although reserving a time is a good idea if you know you'd like to have photography done. A typical group of ten coins can be photographed in as little as an hour, depending on how busy things are that day. Your coins remain with me at the booth while they're being photographed, are never left unattended, and can normally be returned the same day or at a time we arrange together.

And if you didn't bring the coins you'd really like photographed—or there simply isn't enough time during the show—that's fine too. We can arrange to photograph your collection afterward, including having additional coins sent to my studio.

The finished photographs aren't rushed at the show. After ANA, I'll take the captured images back to the studio for the same careful editing and finishing as my regular studio work, then deliver the completed high-resolution files to you by download link.

So whether it's a favourite coin you brought from home, something extraordinary you discovered five minutes ago on the bourse floor, or a larger collection waiting for you back home, stop by Booth 323 and let's talk about it.

Sometimes the easiest opportunity to have your coins professionally photographed is when you're already carrying them.

I'm getting a bad vibe...

In a large trade show like the ANA's World's Fair of Money, there are a lot of people walking around, moving chairs, and general activity that sets a vibration running through the entire building. It's imperceptible walking around, but for a coin photographer, with a stationary coin, this environment can be troublesome. Vibrations, running through my table, makes blurry photos. I experienced this problem before.

Not to worry. To eliminate the problem, now I add damping pads under the feet of my shooting table, the copy stand, and my dynamic axial lighting rig, isolating them from the vibration. I also use high-power flash lighting for fast exposures that keep my images razor sharp. So I'm not getting a bad vibe anymore. Visit my booth to see it all in action.

I'll be photographing coins on-site throughout the ANA World's Fair of Money, from Aug 24th to the 29th, at Booth 323. In the Ancient and World Coins section.
