Morning in the mountains often begins with uncertainty. Clouds drift through the valleys, peaks disappear and reappear and the landscape slowly reveals itself one layer at a time.

This is one from the archives that somehow never made it into my gallery. Perhaps it was overshadowed by more dramatic scenes from that trip. Looking back, I think its quiet mood is exactly what makes it memorable.

For a few moments, the rising sun found this massive cliff face, lighting the rock while the surrounding mountains remained hidden in the mist.

These fleeting moments are why I return again and again before sunrise. The view is never quite the same twice.

A moon alignment lasts only seconds. What you don’t see are the hours of planning, scouting, and the many attempts that never quite came together.

Over the years, chasing these fleeting moments has taught me a lot about patience, preparation, weather, and knowing when to try again.

I’ve gathered some of those lessons into a new Field Notes article, a collection of observations and reflections from years of chasing moon alignments.

Blue Moon Rising . A Blue Moon is the second full moon in a calendar month. ( May 30). This is a composite of 10 moons images taken using the interval timer shooting feature on the Nikon Z5II and merged in . What I find most rewarding about moon chasing is when all that planning comes together in the field and the conditions align just right.

SUNRISE TIPS - Yesterday’s sunrise was spectacular and a perfect reminder that landscape photography starts long before the shutter clicks. This is what I have learned :

1. Arrive and be all set to go at least 30–40 minutes before sunrise. Not just to find your composition and set up your gear but because the sky can transform incredibly fast!!

Frames 2–6 were captured roughly 10 minutes apart from 5:01, 5:16, 5:26, 5:36, to 5:46 AM and each moment felt completely different. The last frame is a BTS video for the cover photo

2. Preparation begins at home. I check to ensure
• batteries charged
• lenses and ND filters cleaned
• tripod ready
• remote attached
• camera settings thought through

3. Checking the weather is key. Dramatic colour like this usually needs high-level clouds to catch the first light of sunrise. Without clouds, you often miss the magic. I like and use ClearOutside

The best light rarely lasts long, sometimes only minutes, which is why being ready before it happens makes all the difference.

A “bridge” to me can be anything that symbolizes connection, transition, or the meeting of two worlds.

For just an instant, the setting sun rests perfectly on the tip of the CN Tower, linking the skyline below with the sky above.

A fleeting alignment where nature and architecture briefly become one before the moment disappears again

Sharpness isn’t always the point. Sometimes movement says more than detail ever could. A small shift of the camera and a slower shutter turned familiar tulips into something softer, more dreamlike, closer to a memory than a record.

Photography doesn’t always have to describe a scene clearly. Sometimes it can simply express how it felt to be there.

A different kind of observation, inspired by ideas explored in my latest Field Notes.

Think you’ve already photographed this place enough? Think again.

How often do we revisit the same places, thinking there is nothing new to find? Yet light has a way of changing everything.

My new Field Notes Observation is about returning to a familiar scene and discovering how mood, shape, and feeling can be rewritten by a different kind of light.

If you’re hoping to visit the tulip fields this season, or even next, perhaps something in this piece may help you see them a little differently.

For the Birds 🐦A small collection from a single morning hour, all captured while the light kept changing and revealing something different in each frame. That’s what pulled me in more than anything. Not the species, but the way the light shaped each moment.

I’m not by any means a birder, so identifying them afterward became part of the process. Thank goodness for Google image search… upload a photo and suddenly I know what I photographed. The seagull, to be fair, I had a head start on. 😄

Sometimes the subject finds you when you’re really chasing the light.

2. ‘Solo Silhouette’
3. ‘Smoke Break’ American Goldfinch
4. ‘Take Off’ Great Egret
5. ‘ Final Approach’ Red Billed Gull
6. ‘ Meadow Walker’ Red-winged Blackbird
