Working on getting that inspiration back. In the meantime, enjoy this view of the abandoned granary/grain silo in Thunder Bay from when I couldn't sleep one April morning

The Fall of (a) Machine

There's an old motel on Highway 69 that's been abandoned for a while. Of an hour or so I spent shooting there, this was one shot that I tried several times to get. This was my best attempt from that day

Firefly

I've looked at the backlog again today, but this time I thought some of the photos looked decent enough to post. (You know, the ones that have been sitting in the backlog since my last post? Those ones.)

That might mean there's going to be more posts on here in the near future, though, given how little actual going out and shooting I've done in the last little while, there might be a bit less variety than before... Until, that is, I go strip mining unposted stuff from the pre-2022 collections!

Also, I've been playing with Lightroom and Topaz's AI cleanup stuff, which means you may see some updated versions of my personal favourites Soon™

📅 July 2022

This is a much more recent photo I'm ambivalent about. In fact, this is so recent, that it hasn't even been 24 hours since the photo has been taken until when I'm writing this blurb.

Part of the hesitation on this shot is actually not pictured. As I've been getting more proficient with editing, I've now started to bump up against the limits of my editing process in Lightroom. It still does a solid 95% of the editing, but with shots like this one, there's little I could do to both reduce noise, and to have the foreground pop more, without having to stack photos and doing more advanced de-noising.

Which is all to say that, given the limitations I had with this shoot, and the amount of noise in the final product that I couldn't get rid of... I just decided to lean into the look.

📅 February 2022

For a photo that I didn't even intend to take (we were literally walking back from taking photos elsewhere to catch the train out), this one came out very well. For a photo that I want to post, it has had too many flaws.

The biggest issue I have with it is the lack of more action. In retrospect, 5 seconds might have even been too long of a time to shoot, as all of the people except one disappeared into the background. The foreground person also didn't manage to make it all the way across the shot, so it also became a bit unbalanced.

📅 February 2022

This photo came so close to being what I wanted it to be. Golden hour sunlight, two strands of grain that stood out from the rest and looked interesting... The combination was about to be great.

And then I forgot to set the aperture properly, which meant that one of the grains was just barely in focus. And then, as I was shooting, a bit of wind came through and started moving things around. Given that we were on a schedule, and the autofocus I had set only focused once per press... I only ended up getting one of the two grains, but still framed in a way for two. I'm still torn on whether it made it a better shot or not, what do you think?

📅 May 2021

Continuing with the photos from the Tasmania trip, this photo upset me based on the quality. Now, I'm actually very happy with the phone I've got, which produces photos that, frankly, I wouldn't expect out of a phone priced as low as I got it at. However, the one thing that's missing here is the ability to edit as much of the photo as I could. I, by this point, had gotten used to the editing power of RAW, and downgrading to a JPG where the lighting didn't quite work out didn't make editing this photo any easier.

📅 May 2021

This shot from Ross made my heart drop when I got home from Tasmania.

In person (and on the tiny preview screen), it seemed like I had got it. Neat sign, church in the background, I had the angles set right... And then I got home, and realized that I didn't quite dial the zoom in right, so, instead of having the church be more prominent, it's effectively just a spire that's easily missed (since the sign isn't quite pointing right at it, which was the intent of the shot). So, it hasn't seen the light of day until now!

Lighthouse at Night

📸 asymmetric.visuals
🖼️ Not Quite Right
📅 December 2021

For the next little bit, I'm going to post a few photos that I took, but for a number of reasons, didn't post.

This one's from a night trip we took to a lookout. Of all the photos from that trip, most have not turned out as nicely as I would like, but the examplar of the kinds of things that went wrong is here.

If you don't look too closely, it looks like an interesting shot. Unfortunately, once you get past the thumbnail, and get it to even a reasonable size, you can start to see the issues. Stars are out of focus, the lighthouse is way too bright (which, notably, I've recently found out I could work around), the clouds are blurry, but not quite so much that one can claim it's "stylistic". Plus, the settings I used ended up producing such a large amount of noise that most of the ground had to be black (or almost black) just to get a reasonable photo.

The lighthouse in Thunder Bay is very photogenic, in a way unlike most other lighthouses. Unfortunately, there's only about two spots where I personally have found decent views. Which one do you like more?
