Sometimes you have an idea and think…

“This is either going to be brilliant or incredibly stupid.”

So naturally, I put my camera underwater. 😂🐠

Would I do it again?

…definitely. 😂

I met these lovely humans in the Comox Valley this summer while they were here on vacation, and we planned a July beach session.

Mom had dreamed of sundresses on the beach, a carefree midsummer evening, and lots of time to simply play together. 🌊☀️

The weather, however, had other plans. 😂

The wind was absolutely WILD and it was definitely not warm.

“Go to Vancouver Island,” they said. “It will be beautiful and warm,” they said. 🤣

So we ditched the beach and met at their adorable little Airbnb instead.

And honestly? I think it turned out pretty perfectly.

Because while a sunny beach is beautiful, the most important part of any family session is being together. And this little family, along with their beloved grandpa, demonstrated that beautifully.

They played, cuddled, laughed, and made memories at the little home they were staying in- and it gave us some pretty sweet little backdrops along the way.

The beach didn’t happen.

But a summer evening they’ll remember did. 🤍

The best family photos usually aren’t the ones where everyone is perfectly posed, perfectly behaved, and looking directly at the camera.

They’re the ones where your toddler is laughing so hard they can barely stand still. Where your teenager actually forgets I’m holding a camera. Where Dad gets caught laughing instead of doing his “photo smile.” Where you pull your kid a little closer without even thinking about it.

Of course, we’ll get the photos where everyone looks at me. Those are important too. ❤️

But after years of photographing families, I’ve learned that the real magic usually happens in between the poses.

That’s why I don’t expect you to show up knowing how to pose or make your kids cooperate perfectly. You don’t need to perform for the camera.

You just need to show up as your family.

I’ll take care of the rest. ✨

Because years from now, I don’t think you’ll care nearly as much about whether everyone was looking at the camera.

You’ll care that you can still see the way your little one looked at you. 🥺 That’s what you want to hold onto forever.

These two in the city last night. 😍

Just an actual dream.✨

P.S I’m going to have a new sister in law next month. ♥️ Couldn’t be happier to celebrate the engagement of these two. 🥺

I know it’s September 1st and it feels like fall has officially arrived, but I’m not quite ready to let summer go yet. So I’m rewinding all the way back to July, when we created these fun, sun-soaked family images on one of those days that already feels like a memory from another lifetime. ☀️

This is Part 2 of the little series I shared from this session, and honestly… these images feel like summer in the very best way. The kind of summer day that settles somewhere deep in your soul and stays there long after the season has passed. The kind you’ll look back on years from now and somehow remember exactly how the air felt, how the kids sounded, and how good it was to simply be together.

And these boys? 😂 They did not come to this session with the intention of giving us a quiet, calm afternoon. They kept me laughing, kept everyone moving, and never once gave us a dull moment. And I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Thank you to this sweet family for welcoming me onto your beautiful property and letting me document a little piece of your life exactly as it is right now.

I absolutely LOVE these. 🤍 And maybe I’m just being stubborn, but I’m going to hang onto summer for a little while longer even if I’m wearing a sweatshirt to my shoot tonight. ✨

This sweet little ONE just turned one, and somehow, photographing her feels like the sweetest little full-circle moment.

I think the very first time I photographed her mama, Hanna, she was dancing at Steps Ahead Dance as a teenager. Since then, I’ve had the absolute privilege of capturing her through many different chapters- as a dancer, a dance teacher, a choreographer, and now, in what might just be her sweetest role yet: Mama. 🤍

And now here I am, photographing her little girl turning one.

I know I say it over and over but its not lost on me that it’s so incredibly special to be invited back into someone’s life again and again. To watch people grow, change, find themselves, build families, and step into entirely new versions of who they are- and to be trusted to preserve little pieces of all of it. 🥹 My heart can hardly handle it.

Hanna, thank you for letting me be there for so many of your chapters. For trusting me with your memories, your milestones, your creativity, and now these beautiful, messy, magical moments of motherhood.

And to this tiny little ONE - you are so very loved. 🥰

Here’s to one whole year of you. And to all the years still to come. 🤍

Ryder.
You’re 15 today and I can barely believe it.
You came into this world just after midnight on August 30th on a popular week in our family for birthday’s, claiming the one day without someone else’s birthday- as your own.

You’re quiet and introspective- even more so in these teen years, and you’re also caring and kind. A really great brother, amazing son, beloved grandson, cousin and nephew. You look like your dad but you definitely take after the McAreavy (moms side) boys.

Every day that you have been alive you have made your dad and i proud and we cant see what the future holds for you.

Happy Birthday Ry Guy, we couldn’t love you more.
