A weekend for the books! Lessons were learned. Fingers and toes were frozen. But my heart was full.

Pileated Woodpeckers - Pic majeur •
The most dinosaurish of the birds I’ve seen, mainly because of their feet. They can’t be ignored, their song, their loud pecking on trees to find bugs to eat even in winter. The male has a red cheek and the female has a black cheek (the last photo is a female). They are so much fun to watch. And they work hard, I always wonder how they don’t get headaches…

Bald Eagles - Haliaeetus leucocephalus - Pygargue à tête blanche • I absolutely love Bald Eagles. I love how majestic they look, they always seem so intense. I feel lucky everytime I see one sitting in a tree or soaring above me. I find myself saying “thank you” pretty much everytime I see one. They are such impressive birds.

Here is a selection of my favorite images over the last few years taken in Ontario, Quebec and Michigan.

Snowy Owl camouflage last winter (female or juvenile) vs this winter (adult male).

Take your eye off of of it for a second and you will have trouble finding it again. I find it amazing how well they can hide in plain sight.

Can you spot the owl in each photo?

My dog Dante used to make winters better because he loved playing in the snow so much! But I think these guys also help me like winters better!

Black-crowned Night Heron - Bihoreau gris • Black-crowned Night Herons are stocky birds compared to many of their long-limbed heron relatives. They’re most active at night or at dusk, when you may see their ghostly forms flapping out from daytime roosts to forage in wetlands. In the light of day adults are striking in gray-and-black plumage and long white head plumes. These social birds breed in colonies of stick nests usually built over water. They live in fresh, salt, and brackish wetlands and are the most widespread heron in the world.

They remind me of GRU from Despicable Me 😂
