BE NICE OR LEAVE •
Words to live by, and enforce— ya feel? Inspiration for this one came from this awesome little sign my dad has in his music store Fuzztone Music in Yorkton. For those of you working in retail, this one’s for you! This was a little submission turned just-for-fun piece.

Okay, y’all! This one needs a little explanation. It’s been one heck of a weird year, and I have great respect for the cats in our city trying to put on events!

Nuit Blanche YXE approached me in early 2020 to create a poster and visual materials for their event, that was supposed to be later that year. Because of the pandemic, ever changing rules, and uncertainty of when the event could go ahead/what it’d be called, they requested I submit working files that they could customize on their end. The NB team did their own version of the “Winter’s End” poster and created some other awesome materials, but here’s a simplified version that I put together for my portfolio.

I was also asked to create a number of frames/elements they could use with the artist photos— swipe to see those! They customized the text for the artist/piece names in the frame templates I created. If you keep swiping, you’ll see the Notice they released about the name change/event date change (originally Nuit Year’s Eve), and then the original poster/event name that I specifically designed this graphic for. It was my first client job done almost completely on the , and it was really fun using some wicked texture brushes from . Thx for reading, and be sure to check out the event!

New single artwork for a wonderful client and friend of mine, ! We were really inspired by the iconic stylings of 60s/70s folk record covers for this one. Give ‘Diamonds’ a spin today, wherever you stream music. 🎧Canadiana folk rock at it’s finest 👌🏻✨

Work completed at the end of last year for Conseil culturel fransaskois and their new project ‘Élévateur Numérique’ (meaning “digital elevator"). It’s a French language digital content production club for 14-17 year olds in Saskatchewan, and a way to get kids interested in areas of work like what I do! Graphics, video, photo, and illustration will all be on the table! Coordinated and mentored by talented musician and creative éemi, these kids are going to have so much fun!

For this work, it was really fun to get to tap into some design stylings tailored to Gen Z. Edgy, modern, slick, curious, attention-grabbing, loud. It also made me feel kinda old, despite only being 27. 💀 In my presentation to the client I used the following language, which is apt in what I was trying to say, but also makes me chuckle. “Graphics that feel in tune with today’s teenagers, a group with an inherent taste level built in from the social media exposure to artists, designers, fashion, and photographic excellence.” Them kids today!👵🏻✨ Hope they dig the pictures!

Hey pals! Just wanted to let you know I’m still alive and well, despite not posting anything in a while 😵 I’ve been working on a ton of new client work and haven’t had time to prep the designs for social yet/there’s lots I can’t release yet! I just wanted to say a big thanks for sticking around and there will be lots of the goods comin’ soon. ✨

If you’re new here, hello! 👋🏻 My name is Emily Kohlert, and I’m the freelancer behind the name Emily Only. I chose that name because I have skills in a lot of different areas and I sunk into the “Jill-of-all-trades” thing pretty quick, especially when I was first starting. The name seemed appropriate and fun, after I saw the handle of my favourite one-half of Fiery Furnances glory (and straight swiped it tbh😅). I used to do a lot more photo work on top of design, and often had jobs where I was wearing a buuunch of hats, so it was kinda fun to be like, yup, it’s just me haha...! Let’s do it!

I’m all about the 60s/70s typography, album covers, and psychedelic posters thanks to my dad’s record collection and love of the art from that era. I’m really inspired by music and my talented friends in the community. I love having a grand ol’ time with pals, going to art/music shows (hopefully again soon!🥲), taking film photos, drinking great craft beer, and having a generally sunny disposition. ☀️ Hopefully that translates in my work!

Anyway, hello and thanks for following along! If you have any questions or want to say hey, feel free to drop me a DM! ☺️ Take care y’all! ✌🏻✨

Greetings from my home office, friends! It’s where I spend all my time. ✏️🌈✨ Wishing everyone a happy new year as we push through the last of this bizarre and challenging one. I hope you’re all doing well and keeping healthy despite many hardships this year. I’ve learned so much over these months and have been doing my best to stay calm, curious, creative, and kind. Here’s to a hopeful and optimistic fresh start as we enter 2021. ☀️🙏🏻✨

Hi all! Hope you had a marvellous Christmas. 🎄🎁✨🌟 I’m taking a couple days off and then will be returning to client work, but I thought I would share a portrait of my rats, Sir Barry Lyndon and Lord Bullingdon. Named after the Kubrick film masterpiece ‘Barry Lyndon’, these little guys have loads of personality and are amazing pets.
Lord Bullingdon (or, Bully for short) cuddles with me every morning when I scoop him up and hold him against my chest. I’ll carry him around with me as I get ready, and there’s no shortage of kisses on my cheek. Barry is a lot more energetic, always curious and exploring. My favourite is when I bring him out onto the couch and he excitedly hops about, traversing the blanket-covered landscape. They’re favourite snacks are walnuts, pumpkin seeds, blueberries, tomatoes, and bananas!
From my ratpack family to yours, Happy Holidays 🙂🎄🐁✨🐀❄️

Trickle Pie Jewelry had arrived! ✨ Welcome to the artistic eye of my dad, Ken Kohlert (), who was a professional stained glass artist in the 80s (and now music store owner🤘🏻). In the mid 80s he used this technique to make all this rad jewelry by melting pieces of glass together. It sat in a sealed box all these years until I figured they could have new life by redesigning the packaging and putting it out into the 2020 modern world. The fine folks at are carrying the pieces in their shop (online/in-store) for your purchasing pleasure. Let’s bring back brooches, yea!? 😍 •

The snow stung my skin / as the moon shone bright / Cold was the wind / dark was the night / I couldn’t tell / if the energy had left me / a mere reflection / staring back beseeching / questioning my intent / the gooey truth in the middle / of who really am I? / and why do I feel so little?
❄️🖤🌙
Wishing you well on this snowy, Saskatchewan day during the strangest of times.
