Bugging out in the backyard!!

Sometimes the coolest critters are right under your nose! Backyard biodiversity is always amazing! And almost every time I find something new or unique I’ve never seen before.

Forest tent caterpillar, crane fly, poplar borer beetle, orb weaver, rosewing moth!

This housefly was hijacked by Entomophthora muscae, a parasitic fungus that takes control of its host's brain.

Infected flies climb grass stems, lock their legs, and spread their wings in a death pose. Overnight the fungus erupts through the abdomen as white spore sacs, firing spores sideways at dusk to infect the next victim.

Past humans really liked rocks, sticks, antlers, and anything they could eat or make into clothing or shelter….

Like the people before me, I like rocks…
