A rare sighting! While at Saint Rest Beach in near-zero visibility, this majestic pelagic bird suddenly appeared out of nowhere. At first, I thought it was just a fry-loving seagull, but on closer look, it turned out to be an Arctic Skua.

Did you know that The Arctic Skua, is also called the Parasitic Jaeger, is known for its “pirate” behavior—it often chases other seabirds mid-air and forces them to drop their catch, snatching the stolen meal before it hits the water.

Fun fact about the Savannah Sparrow's call:
The Savannah Sparrow has a distinctive buzzy call that often sounds like it’s saying “tsi-tsi-tsi-saaaaa,” with the final note drawn out like a tiny insect’s buzz. Each male has his own slight variation, like a personal signature—perfect for standing out in a crowded field!

Each summer, thousands of shorebirds including Semipalmated Sandpipers, Semipalmated Plovers, Least Sandpipers and several other species stop to rest and feed on our beaches before continuing their incredible migrations.

These birds are tired, hungry, and vulnerable during this time. That is why we launched the Shorebird Conservation and Education Project in 2019, to give them the space and safety they need.

Stay tuned this month to learn how you can help share the shore.

The Shorebird Conservation and Education Project is supported by our funders at the NB Wildlife Trust Fund, the NB Environmental Trust Fund and Birds Canada.

This moment was slowed down 5x so we can truly appreciate their grace, coordination, and power in the air. Nature’s choreography at its finest.
