We are grieving. We are in pain. We are angry.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Though we’ve been openly expressing these emotions for weeks now, we each have our own way of coping with this as individuals. I’d like to thank those of you who reached out privately and checked in while I remained offline. This has been very difficult. But our fight will only continue to grow louder and stronger. In addition to all that has been said from behind our screens, there are so many more things that can be done beyond the hashtags

We will prevail.

Over the last few days, my wife and I have continued to take evening walks around our neighbourhood, and it has been interesting to see people who don’t look like us make enthusiastic efforts to wave at us and say “hello”. I wish our fallen brothers and sisters were acknowledged this same way, and I wish they could have continued walking or running wherever their lives would have led them. I have also noticed a few shout outs from others as part of their efforts to support Black owned businesses during these times - thank you, I appreciate you.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And to my new followers over the last few days, I hope you are here with genuine intentions to be an ally. I hope being here will be an opportunity for you to learn more about us. But please know that the colour of our skin has been a reason for judgment and discrimmination from others even before we were old enough to understand why. This is not a fad or trend that will end when others move onto the next hot topic. This has been our lives and it will continue to be this way for a very long time.

If hitting that “follow” button was nothing more than a checkbox on your list of things to do, please find your way back to that button and hit “unfollow”. We are more than that.

For everyone else, I need to introduce you to my brother Josh and his beautiful wife, Caroline. I had the special opportunity to take a few photos of them after their Zoom wedding during this pandemic a month ago. Josh wrote a powerful article in the Ottawa Citizen about being our ally. https://ottawacitizen.com/opinion/dadjo-welcome-to-the-fight-i-hope-you-stick-around, please have a read.
