It will be visible in the very early hours of March 3rd. Only in Western Canada, along the coast of B.C. and into the Yukon, will the entire eclipse be visible - although clear skies are required...

Below are two of my pictures from previous total moon eclipses:
- a close up taken in Vancouver BC, in March 2025
- a wide shot of the red moon and northern lights from November 2022 in the Northwest Territories.

Another spotless day? Well, almost!
What I mean is the Sun is currently showing a few sunspots, with AR 4341 being the largest visible one (on the left).

Sunspots are often the source of solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) โ€” the solar storms that can trigger auroras. Thatโ€™s why this is something I always keep an eye on.

Solar Cycle 25 has been particularly active, with sunspots present every single day for the past four years (except for one day in 2022), making this an exciting time for aurora watchers.

AND it is a sunny day here at home, and always a treat when I can take of pictures of sunspots.

Itโ€™s a wrap โ€” 2025 in a few frames.

From bald eagles, orcas, and humpback whales to a lunar eclipse, aurora borealis, and even a cometโ€ฆ 2025 delivered some unforgettable moments.
It also brought a brand-new knee! And Christmas lights to end the year on a bright note.

Looking ahead to 2026 and getting back to doing what I love most: taking thousands of photos again.
Hereโ€™s to more adventures, wild encounters, and clear skies ahead!

Aurora Borealis over Bowen Island, BC from Whytecliff Park in West Vancouver.
A few pictures taken early this evening around 6:30pm before it was too cloudy. During this G4 geomagnetic storm, I could see the pink with my naked eyes. If only we could have clear skies all night... Hopefully, some of you are/have enjoyed some beautiful displays of northern lights tonight!

Comet Lemmon (C/2025 A6) is now visible to the naked eye โ€” though you need to know where to look! โ˜„๏ธ
It is getting brighter until the end of the month, but since clear nights are rare around Vancouver, BC in October, I took the first opportunity I could.

Can you spot the comet? This photo is a single shot at 70mm (cropped to 100mm equivalent), f/2.8, 6-second exposure, ISO 5000 - a little grainy with my D800, but Iโ€™m pretty happy with it. Maybe even more so because this was my first night outing since getting a new knee!

Last evening, I had the incredible privilege of seeing three wild orca whales from the shore, right here close to home. I tracked them online throughout the day as they made their way from Burrard Inlet up to Indian Arm, and then back in the evening.

Catching them swim gracefully under the Lions Gate Bridge and glide right along the Stanley Park seawall was quite amazing! And being able to share that moment with so many others made the 3-hour wait so worth it for those few unforgettable minutes.

After spotting a grey whale twice a week ago in the same waters, witnessing orcas too feels almost unreal. What an absolute gift from nature, right in the heart of Vancouver Harbour.

Picture 1: Orca swimming under the Lions Gate bridge with people watching from Prospect Point lighthouse on the seawall in Stanley Park, and Prospect Point lookout.

Spotted Little Patch again! ๐Ÿ‹ This is my second sighting of the grey whale (CRC ID #53) thatโ€™s been making appearances in Burrard Inlet over the past few days. Today, I watched it from Dundarave in West Vancouver, BC, where it was feeding and moving back and forth close to shore. Such an incredible experience to see this gentle giant up close in our local waters.

Thereโ€™s been a grey whale nicknamed Little Patch (CRC ID #53) hanging around Burrard Inlet for the past few days, and this afternoon I was lucky enough to see it from the seawall in West Vancouver, BC! ๐Ÿ‹

What an incredible experience to witness such majestic wildlife right from the shore. The contrast between this whale surfacing beside massive cargo ships is a powerful reminder of how nature continues to coexist โ€” and adapt โ€” alongside urban development.

P.S. Apologies for the bad lighting in these pictures, but I still wanted to share the moment.

Did you know that BC is home to 2,452 waterfalls, according to the World Waterfall Database? Back in 2021, when travel restrictions were in place, I started exploring waterfalls close to home and visited 34 waterfalls - I do have a few more to go!

In this post, Iโ€™m sharing accessible waterfalls near Vancouver, BC, perfect for a day trip, weekend getaway, or staycation. Some offer picnic spots, while others have camping areas nearby.

Last nightโ€™s total lunar eclipse was visible despite the forecast predicting rain! The clouds moved in and out, allowing a few moments to capture the event.

The first photo shows the moon about two-thirds covered by the Earthโ€™s shadow โ€” the top remains bright, while the bottom begins to take on a reddish hue. The second photo shows the moon completely in shadow, glowing a deep red.
