Christmas in the Harbour

Each December,
for the past 27 years,
the Port de Grave harbour
is transformed into a luminous celebration
of tradition, where illuminated boats
reflect both the spirit of Christmas
and the enduring bond
between community, folk and sea.

Elliston & Maberly
August 28, 2025

Situated at the northeastern tip of
the Bonavista Peninsula in Trinity Bay,
Elliston, was once known as Bird Island Cove.

And for good reason,
it hosts one of North America’s
closest land-based puffin colonies
perched on nearby coastal rocks.

The community has also dubbed itself
as the “Root Cellar of the World” - again,
a well-earned title as it boasts over
135 root cellars.

Elliston is part of the UNESCO-designated Discovery Global Geopark, celebrated for its geological and natural heritage.

Each year, the community also hosts
the popular “Roots, Rants & Roars” -
a culinary & hiking Festival.

Nearby is the small coastal hamlet of
Maberly, with its scenic ocean views
& village charm.

Port Rexton
August 27, 2025

Tucked along the Bonavista Peninsula,
Port Rexton dazzles with its rolling green meadows that slope towards a rugged coastline.

In those meadows are one of the community’s many attractions- the horses.

They stand grazing in small pastures framed by weathered fences and wild summer flowers
doting the landscape.

Port Rexton exudes harmony-
between land and sea,
people and their special horses,
which seem to carry the spirit of
this coastal community-
strong, grounded
and quietly free…

Melrose
August 27, 2025

Now a part of Trinity Bay North,
Melrose was originally known
as Ragged Harbour until 1904.

The settlement became permanent
only around the early 1800s,
with Irish families
arriving around 1815–1819-
carving a settlement through
Kinship & faith.

It has long-standing roots
as a small fishing community;
and today, offers a quiet, quaint & scenic
coastal landscape.

“Brigus reminds us that the sacred
lives in small harbours and quiet hills.”

Just off Newfoundland’s southern shore,
lies St. Pierre and Miquelon
—a small French outpost
clinging to the edge of North America.

The distance between them is
barely a morning’s sail, 25 Kms;
yet it feels like crossing centuries:
from the salt-stained wharves of Fortune, NL,
to cobbled lanes in SPM, where café windows also bear witness to the same Atlantic Ocean.

NL & SPM has had centuries of intertwined history and despite the ocassional dispute,
the two maintain friendly connections
rooted in geography, history, and mutual dependence on the North Atlantic.

Travellers can get to St. Pierre via ferries or air travel. The island is enchanting, charming, picturesque and culturally vibrant.

Nestled along the rugged shorelines of Conception Bay,
Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s offers endless
scenic natural beauty,
including incredible sunsets
that soothe even the weariest of souls.

For generations, the cod fishery
was the backbone of life here.
Families set out in small boats at dawn, and the community’s rhythm was tied to the tides.

After the 1992 cod moratorium,
fishing declined, but fish heritage is still deeply embedded in its culture, festivals, and stories;
and in the seasonal food fishery “festival,”
when folks gather upon
the wharves and the sea;
and echo the dance that has swayed
here for centuries….

Port au Choix is a sacred meeting place
of a crossroads of cultures, sea and spirits.

Here, the persistent wind whispers
the wisdom of Indigenous people
dating back 6,000 years ago
to modern day folks and fishers.

This place keeps memories and stories,
together with superb scenic shores,
sunsets and wildlife.

Truly, it is a place where
the soul breathes easier…

Port Rexton is a rugged beauty
nestled along the Bonavista Peninsula.

Part of the region know as the “Trinity Bight,”
Port Rexton sits along
the popular Skerwink Trail,
one of the most
breathtaking coastal hikes in the country.

Traditionally a fishing outport,
the community’s roots lie in the cod fishery,
with many older homes still reflecting
this treasured heritage.
