Title: "Blue Silk"
I am all for that harsh deep contrast. Usually I feel like the deep dark silhouettes usually come from further mid ground but here we have it boldly out front. Gabriola Island looms in behind with gentle highlights from its well known rock faces. Another beautiful dramatic photo for the Outer Harbour.

The Great Cormorant is a common ocean bird from Canada to Australia and also in India. Often hanging around marinas and other good fishing spots. These birds are common to Vancouver Island's shorelines. A beautiful, larger bird. Their crooked beaks make identifying these birds quite easy.

Title: "Isolated Argument"
From this photo we can tell just a few things. The log in which the two birds that can be seen is pretty far off. The land behind the birds is even farther away. The next thing we notice is one of the birds has it's wings spread. While the bird is likely drying off after taking a dip to fish we can almost imagine it's having a heated argument with its nearby companion out in open water.

Title: "Texture"
I love the texture of the bedrock around Vancouver Island. Every rock painted with its own unique pits. Different sizes and shapes cover the ground. Putting a soft background like the ocean makes such an effective crisp foreground scene.

Thanks for viewing!

Title: "South of the Narrows"
The Salish Sea is a magical and beautiful area. Gorgeous views can be easily found. Even on darker grey days like in this photo. The contrast of the closest darkest island on the various blues of the mountains and clouds comparing to the contrast of the waters reflection of light creates such a unique light versus dark fight.

Title: "Weathered"
The bed rock along with everything else on Vancouver Island is severely weathered mainly by the salt water, along with wind and acidic rain. Here at the shoreline the bedrock is covered in various sized pits caused by the salty ocean waves. A spectacular sight if you're into rocks like me. 😉

Title: "Liquid Sky"
I love this elongated photo of moments before I captured "Morning Fire". In this capture, you can see Gabriola Island, Dodd's Narrows and the Shoreline edge of Protection Island. Though the sky bright with various pinks, oranges and yellows, my eyes are drawn to the water. Soft waves catching the colours of the sunrise alongside blacks and greys from the clouds overhead. Contrasting the brightest of light and darkest of dark. What a breathtaking sunrise on the Salish Sea.

Title: "Splish-Splash"
A spawning salmon makes a wild jump into the air and lands with an incredible splash! Playing along Nanaimo River during Fall produced some breath taking salmon photos. Although it did take some careful planning and instinctual timing to capture this moment.

Title: "Winner Winner, Oysters for Dinner"
This determined little bird is an oyster catcher and it has found itself a mussel. Now it has to use its perfectly shaped beak to open it. These little birds are constantly busy looking for something to eat. I know the feeling! But once in awhile when they shove their beaks into these shells their beaks can become stuck which can be fatal for them. A job for a tough little bird indeed.

Title: "A Common Goal"
These plump, little, dark birds are called Oyster Catchers. Recognizing these plentiful bird is easy with their bright orange beak along with bright orange/yellow eyes, dark bodies and a light pink to white coloured legs. They can often be found along coastlines in small flocks feasting on various shellfish. Their chatter is very distinguished higher pitched repeated cry. I love hearing their chatter personally. While kayaking they are always a pleasure to watch for any amount of time.

Title: "Guts"
One year ago, a jellyfish that was misplaced from a spring storm was shored near Nanaimo's Inner Harbour. Seeming to float back and forth a short way from surface to the rocks, repeatedly. Luckily for me, I had the chance to photograph this one time occurrence. As I have not seen any since this particular encounter. Even from my kayak. Let's hope that changes this year!

Title: "Natural Defence"
I have always found wildlife so interesting. From the way they interact, their behaviours, and the way they're built. An adult Common Loon has dark black feathers with white spotted patterns. Yet the baby is a very soft grey to light brown. For the young, it helps them to blend in with the water as you can see here but also with their shoreline. A very lucky characteristic.
