I’m pleased to share that I have recently received two Canada Council for the Arts grants to develop two distinct new bodies of work.

Each project opens a different line of inquiry within my wider practice, continuing my interest in memory, Black presence, landscape, history, and the ways personal and collective experience are held in place.

More soon on each project, the research behind them, and the questions they will allow me to pursue.

We acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.

The Weight of Light

This work begins by questioning the long-standing idea of light as a metaphor for knowledge, truth, and progress.

Since the Enlightenment, light has been used to signify clarity and understanding. Yet these same ideas were also mobilised to justify colonial expansion and systems of control.

To illuminate was therefore not simply to reveal, but also to name, classify, and ultimately possess land and people.

The Weight of Light

Light falling on the land reveals not only what is physically visible, but also the traces of colonial ways of seeing that continue to shape these places and the Black bodies moving through them.

Whether arriving as Black Loyalists, travellers at the end of the Underground Railroad, or artists many years later, Black presence in these landscapes remains entangled with those histories.

The Weight of Light

If colonialism reordered land through maps and drawn lines, the wall and other boundaries are where that line becomes visible.

The project links landscapes in West Africa and Québec, tracing how colonial ways of seeing continue to shape the land and the bodies moving through it.

On September 13th, the BredaPhoto Festival opens. Get your passe-partout now for €29.50 (regular price €49.50)! In the run-up to the festival, we will introduce our artists to you. 🤍

Andrew Jackson’s project ‘From Whence We Came’ presents an intimate portrayal of the intricate paths of our lives across multiple, transnational and intergenerational contexts. These thoughtful, tender photographs of loved ones, of the places where they lived, the homes they made, of that which they left behind, give us pause.

Photography cannot provide but fragmentary glimpses into the past, yet here, the work invites visitors to consider points of connection within our vastly divided yet deeply interconnected world: what lies between then and now, there and here, wherever and whenever we might find ourselves in this movement.

I'm really happy to have been selected to be in the Breda Festival lineup this September. I'm really looking forward to attending and seeing the work of the other photographers. Many grateful thanks goes to for all of her support and hard work in helping to make this happen - it means a lot!

Posted • Happy to share the Lineup for BredaPhoto 2024! I'm deeply grateful to these incredible artists who have accepted our invitation to join this year's festival and to the wonderful team I have been working with for more than a year as guest co-curator.

Special thanks to Rosângela Rennó with whom I am working on a solo show at the spectacular Grote Kerk Breda. Likewise to Maria Magdalena Campos Pons, Mónica Alcázar-Duarte and Claudia Gordillo, I couldn't be happier about being able to bring precious work by such inspiring artists from Latin America and the diaspora. To Andrew Jackson whose beautiful work demonstrates time and again our interconnectedness. And not least to Max Gorbatskyi and Viktoria Bavykina from Ukrainian.Photographies, Selman Selma and Ioana Cîrlig because it's such a privilege to be able to bring such powerful work from Eastern Europe, my home region.

The Lineup includes many incredible artists and practitioners, and we've been working hard to ensure this exhibition and the programming is not to be missed! Hope you can join us in September in Breda.

Photography can often be either feast or famine.

Currently, though, without sounding boastful, *straightens tie* I have a full plate *the writer crosses himself, at this point, and looks upwards towards the heavens* as I'm working on several exhibitions and hopefully concluding a long-term work in progress in Europe.

The work, Such is the Pathway, explores the inter-generational traumas of war upon a family still living with the legacies of World War II, but also the desire for acts of commemoration and memorialisation which follow all war's end.
