Seriously great album

On this day in 1995, Rancid released one of the most iconic punk albums of the 90s.
..And Out Come the Wolves is the third Rancid studio album. It was produced by Jerry Finn and released on August 22, 1995, through Epitaph Records.

Rancid's second album, Let's Go, was released in 1994 to unexpected success and acclaim. After the release of Green Day's Dookie and The Offspring's Smash later that year, Rancid was pursued by several major labels, hence the title, ...And Out Come the Wolves, taken from a poem in Jim Carroll's The Basketball Diaries.

The cover art is a tribute to Minor Threat, that originally used the image of Alec MacKaye (brother of the band's lead singer Ian MacKaye) with his head on his knees on steps of the Wilson Center steps on their eponymous debut EP.

Such an epic image and now we know why

The photo used on the iconic cover of The Clash's London Calling album was taken in 1979 at the Palladium in New York City by photographer Pennie Smith.

Paul Simonon explained that he smashed the bass out of frustration when he found out that the bouncers were not allowing the audience members to stand up out of their seats; "I wasn't taking it out on the bass guitar, 'cause there ain't anything wrong with it", Simonon said. "The bouncers wouldn’t let the audience stand up. That frustrated me to the point that I destroyed my bass guitar."

The photographer, Pennie Smith, originally didn't want the photo to be used. She thought it was too out of focus, but Joe Strummer and graphic designer Ray Lowry thought it would make a good album cover.

The artwork was designed by Lowry and was an homage to the design of Elvis Presley's self-titled debut album from 1956, with pink letters down the left side and green text across the bottom.
