On Sunday evening I had the amazing opportunity to have my work critiqued by one of my favourite photographers, . Myself, along with five other photographers, spent over four hours going over some of our images, receiving feedback on how Nick would approach the composition and editing. The value of the learning and lessons was priceless. Nick intends to run similar sessions to this one in the future so if you want this same opportunity, sign up for his emails and be quick when the invitation arrives. The first one, which I was extraordinarily fortunate to sign up for, sold out in fifteen minutes.

This is one of the images I submitted. The second image is my original edit. I have incorporated the post processing changes he suggested and while subtle, they add new layers of dimension and interest. I look forward to working through the rest of my images, incorporating his teachings.

But perhaps the best part was the community of photographers that developed as a result of this session. I’m looking forward to meeting regularly with my new friends!⁣⁣⁣⁣

This image serves as a great reminder to pay attention to EVERY aspect of an image while out in the field. I was so focused on the Milky Way and light painting the tree that I completely overlooked the insanely bright lights from the house on the other side of the lake. Our eyes are naturally drawn to the brightest areas of an image. My aim was to highlight the old dead tree and Milky Way as the stars of the show, but due to my carelessness, the blown out highlights of the house serve as a major distraction. Had I paid more attention to those blown out highlights, I could have taken an image exposed for those lights and painted that section in via Photoshop in post. This really emphasizes the importance of checking every detail before you pack up for the night. No detail is to small, or bright, to overlook.

Being in the right place at the right time is never more true than in photography. The mist you see in this image drifted in an out of the scene in under 5 minutes. Without the mist, you don't have an image. It's just a boring photograph filled with fir trees. This is why it is so important to go to the same location at different times of day and year. Because the conditions are ever changing, you never know what beauty you'll find on any particular visit.
