Tread Softly Travel is a blog, created to share stories, songs and images from my travels and explorations. As a photographer and filmmaker who loves to travel, I wanted a platform to showcase my experiences. The first journey I will share on this blog will be stories from my recent trip to the UK and Ireland. Check the first few instalments, as I journey to Snowdonia, in Northern Wales. About msm

Throwback Thursday: Let’s go back to that old covered bridge, the oldest bridge in the US still in use! Bitzer’s Mill Covered bridge spans the Conestoga River on Cat’s Back Road in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. I visited here in 2017 on a day trip with my kind couchsurfing host who showed me all around Amish country! Built in 1846, Wikipedia says it’s the oldest bridge in use, while google maps images show it being closed and under construction. I looked into why and discovered that a 13ft+ high tractor trailer attempted to squeeze through here in 2023, obviously getting quite stuck and causing extensive damage. Driver didn’t see the sign. 🙄

This isn’t the first time this bridge has needed repairs due to vehicular negligence. Reminds me of the Talbot St. bridge in my city which is always eating large vehicles. 🚚

Despite needing repairs on the regular, this bridge has survived nearly 180 years of service due to its exceptional construction and effective Burr Truss design. Built with basic tools and phenomenal craftsmanship it stands the test of time, but maybe not the wrath of bad drivers!

On this day a decade ago, I was exploring Antwerp, Belgium. This is Teniersplaats, featuring a statue of Baroque Flemish painter David Teniers the Younger. He founded the Antwerp Academy, training young artists in an effort to revive the Flemish art scene after the death of prominent area artists Rubens and van Dyck in the early 1640s. His work can be found around the world, including at the Louvre and the MET. He also helped contribute to the fad of “singeries”, painting scenes with monkeys, wearing human clothing. Now you know. 🙈

Teniersplaats marks the beginning of a fashionable shopping street, Meir. The neo-Baroque building shown was designed by architect Ernest Dieltiëns and now houses fancy shops, including Armani. Across the street is it’s counterpart, another gorgeous building, this one designed by Frans Van Dijk in 1899. Both buildings were commissioned by the city.

On a more tragic note, in November 1944, this square was V-bombed, killing 128 civilians and 29 soldiers. In that month alone 114 bombs hit the city and the surrounding area. More than 600 people perished. The chances of a friend, neighbour or family member being hit was very high for the citizens of Antwerp during the war.

I haven’t been travelling in a long time. Gearing up for a big trip soon. Taking a breather at one of my favourite creek side spots close to home. Stop scrolling, breathe it in.

M'encanta aquesta casa! This is my favourite house in Europe, Casa Batlló by Gaudí: A building redesigned in 1904 into a work of art. It is more like a piece of coral than a building, with nary a straight line in the place, the walls flow like water and the building features shine like jewels in the sea. Gaudí's designs are inspired by nature and they feel like an extension of the natural world. On this day in 2015, I got to explore the interior of this wonderland.

Throwback to the Medieval Period! This is Gravensteen, an imposing citadel, built for both the protection and intimidation of the burghers of Ghent.

It has an impressive moat and a spooky dungeon, making this castle check all the right boxes on what I would expect from a medieval fortress. Gravensteen has been home to a court, prison and later, a cotton mill. It was almost demolished, but saved and renovated at the turn of the 20th century, in an attempt to emulate its original Gothic style. The fairytale fortress of Gravensteen has a grisly past as a house of torture. There was an exhibit inside, so the place was packed with all sorts of terrifying devices, such as; chain necklaces with spikes facing inwards, iron maidens, racks, thumbscrews, breaking wheels and a guillotine.

On this day in 2015: Ghent, Belgium.

Happy World Water Day from Ontario, Canada. Feeling gratitude for the clean drinking water (some of) our communities have access to. Urging everyone to continue pressuring the government to ensure safe, clean drinking water for all, end privatization of wells that only profit the rich corporations that hijack municipal water supplies, and hold accountable the industries that pollute our precious waterways!

Fowlds Mill, Hastings, Ontario, built in 1871 was converted to hydro-electric power by 1910, providing power to the nearby tannery. Today, it’s a private residence, but it is still capable of generating hydro-electric power.

I'm still discovering damage from the Derecho storm that ripped through Ontario, Canada last spring. On a recent visit to one of my favourite public beaches on Stoney Lake, the iconic island off the beach looks a lot different than it did on my last visit a couple of years ago. 2019 vs 2022. Talked to some canoe trekkers who saw the aftermath of trees downed all along the lakeshore. Today, I'm thinking of my East Coast friends and the damages to both property and losses of many natural wonders, beloved trees uprooted and teacup rock formations washed away by Fiona's fury these past few days.

On this day in 2015, I was exploring the medieval cobbled streets and canals of Bruges, one of my favourite cities. It’s been what feels like ages since I’ve travelled outside my province of Ontario, Canada and I’m itching for the adventure again. What’s on your destination dream list? Finland and Newfoundland are up there on mine.
