I often ask my clients when the last time they had a headshot was. It scares me how many people have replied "Probably when I got my passport renewed."

I need to say this loudly so everyone in the back can hear me - That. Is. Not. A. Headshot!

A headshot is meant to represent who you are. A passport photo is meant to make you look like you are about to steal a whole family while on vacation.

Let's reframe the idea of a headshot from something that is stiff and you only do because you have to; to a portrait of your true self and something that will help your future clients trust you before their first interaction with you!

Honestly, most people are one good photo away from looking as credible as they actually are.

People often avoid having a professional portrait taken simply because they don't like being in front of the camera. I get it. It can feel awkward sometimes, but it is my job as a photographer to help you feel comfortable and capture a portrait you love. I'm not your Aunt Shirley forcing you to stand next to that cousin you didn't know you had at Christmas dinner in 2024... I truly care about how you look in your photo and I want you to be proud to post it!

Think of this:

You are asking your future clients to trust you with the sale of their home, their retirement finances, or even a large reno.

If you don't care about making sure your online presence looks professional and complete, why would your future clients assume you'll care enough to make sure their job is handled properly?

You care about your product, let your portrait show it!

That might sound harsh, but there's a reason LinkedIn profiles with professional headshots receive 21 times more profile views.

When working with corporate executives being sensitive of time management is of utmost importance. Often times headshots and team portraits need to be squeezed in between meetings or during lunch.

This session lasted about 30 minutes. That was headshots with 2 different backgrounds and lighting, this spontaneous team portrait, and reviewing the images on my laptop as we went!

No need to travel to a studio when I can bring the studio to you!

Studio Lighting or Natural Light? Which is your preference?

I personally love a natural light portrait! When it comes to having your new headshot taken though, a few things need to be considered.

1. Does your image need to match other team members? While natural light looks fantastic, (mobile) studio lighting is often the simplest to replicate.

2. Where is the image being used? If it's only for a profile photo, then natural vs studio lighting may not matter as long as the backdrop is clean. If it's for an "about" or "team" page on a website then you need to consider what will seamlessly fit into the site the best. Often times studio lighting will take the win on this one. Specially if you are wanting an image that is considered timeless.

3. Will the image need to be cut out? If you plan on separating yourself from the background for use on a business card, bus bench, or even a website banner, studio lighting and solid backdrop is the way to go. This will allow for the simplest and cleanest cut out and the lighting will also blend the most naturally.

Timeless beats trendy. Every single time.

For photographers it can be tempting to edit or shoot images that follows the latest social media trend for the sake of gaining likes. The issue is trends go out of style. They come in and out of fashion (welcome back Ed Hardy!). You should not be able to put a date on an image based off of the way it was shot or edited.

Whether you are needing an individual headshot, team portraits (like this post), or a full branding session, my goal is to deliver you media that does not date itself and works for you year after year.

A photographer should have returning clients because their client changed their look, not because the photographer delivered images that chased a now out of date trend.

Your LinkedIn photo is working 24/7. Is it working for you or against you?

Studies show that visitors to your LinkedIn profile judge your profile photo within 1 second of landing on your page.

1 second!

Take that in for a moment. What is your current profile picture saying about you and your business? Could you imagine if you are missing out on connections or potential business because your headshot isn't representing you properly? That'd be tragic đŸ˜ª

The hotel lobby.

My client flew me out to Edmonton to photograph an event and capture headshots for those in attendance. After I had wrapped and packed up my gear, I was approached by this subject that had unfortunately missed his opportunity to have a headshot on the white backdrop.

I quickly grabbed my camera and brought him out into the lobby. Within a minute we had captured what might be my favourite image from the day! A comfortable pose with a confident yet inviting expression, basked in natural light!

If your headshot represented the first handshake you had with a potential client, what type of handshake would it be?

This might seem like a silly comparison, but a lot can be communicated through both a handshake and a headshot.

A handshake that is firm shows confidence. A soft or loose handshake can indicate passivity or disinterest. While a handshake that nearly crushes the other persons hand can be a sign of attempted dominance.

With this framing in mind, what does your current headshot say about you? When someone clicks on your LinkedIn profile or company website, what handshake are they greeted with?

Let me introduce myself!

I'm Isaac, the man behind the lens. I've had a camera in my hand since around the age of 13, and have been lucky enough to be working full time in the industry for the last decade!

I have a passion for making people feel seen and capturing portraits that my clients love. One of my greatest joys in life is taking the person who says "I hate having my photo taken" and helping them become comfortable in front of the camera.

When I'm not shooting for work, I absolutely love capturing landscapes and street photos! These two mediums have definitely shaped me into the photographer I am today, even when it comes to my corporate work.

Outside of photography you can find me getting lost in the forest hiking, camping, mountain biking, and snowboarding!
