I listened to an interesting podcast interview with a photographer who said he wasn’t a wedding photographer but he is a photographer who photographs weddings. It totally reframed how I’m currently thinking about how the experts say to stay in one lane at a time so that people recognize your work by your aesthetic blah blah blah - so here it is:
I am a photographer who photographs:
- weddings in

a comfortable natural artistic, yet real, aesthetic,
- Santa Claus in a positive memory manner,
- headshots that show professional friendliness,
- families that memorialize relationships,
- portraits that reveal character,
- shopping centres that show value and traffic,
- new building architecture photography that shares a vision of the designer and efforts of the builders and owners
- and personal work that tells stories
In the end, there are different stories to share and different ways that photographs tell them - and I want to make pictures that are unique to each subject I get to photograph.

For years, many people have known me as a wedding photographer.

Others know me for architectural photography.

Some know me because I photographed their family.

Or their headshots.

Or even pictures of their dogs.

Or the annual Santa photos that become a tradition families return to year after year.

At first glance, those all seem like completely different things.

They're not.

They're all part of the same story.

History begins with a photograph.

A wedding becomes family history.

A family portrait becomes the photograph your grandchildren will know you by.

A headshot becomes the face people remember.

An architectural photograph becomes part of a building's legacy.

A personal urban architectural project becomes a record of how we lived in our cities.

Every photograph marks a moment that, one day, will matter more than it does today.

That's why this page is changing.

Rather than separating my work into different boxes, this page will become home to everything I photograph.

Weddings.

Families.

Headshots.

Architecture.

Personal urban architectural projects.

Different subjects.

And the occasional dog.

One purpose.

Your history begins with a photograph.

Three sessions before the wedding day?

Yes.

Amy and Daniel’s wedding isn’t until September.

These photographs are from their third session together.

We first met at the Capital Wedding Show in January.

As Amy put it:

“Since this was our first professional photoshoot together, having those sessions made such a difference.

We felt more comfortable and confident each time, and now we genuinely feel ready for the wedding day.”

That’s exactly why every wedding now includes three pre-wedding sessions:

• Before You Book Walk to see if we’re the right fit.

• Engagement Session to become comfortable in front of the camera.

• A final pre-wedding session designed around you and your wedding.

For Amy and Daniel, that final session became a portrait session on the day of Amy’s hair and makeup trial.

By the wedding day, we’re not starting.

We’re continuing the walk we started in January.

Thousands of cars pass over the Vimy Memorial Bridge between Riverside South and Barrhaven every hour. It’s also a great landmark for wedding pictures with access from Claudette Cain Park and Chapman Mills Conservation Area - if you don’t mind walking.
Maria and Ian and their wedding party were willing, so here we are!

Maria’s prewedding with - I love that makeup artists like to use window light for a true to colour feel (and also because it often means I can shoot through glass and not interrupt their process).

"What do you do together?"

Amy and Daniel met through Kendo.

So after we made the invitation photographs they needed, we made the photographs that felt like them.

The ones their friends will point to and say:

"Yep. That's Amy and Daniel."

Because the goal isn't to create a version of you.

It's to recognize the one that already exists.

Two perspectives, modified setups.

I can see either (or both) of these photographs hanging on Maria and Ian's wall in thirty years

But here's the thing: the black & white photograph was set up and made by me and the colour was set up and made by Bilal DaHro who assisted/second shot with me.

And most importantly, these couldn't have been made without Maria, Ian and their wedding party's enthusiasm.

Vimy Memorial Bridge

As part of my planning process I scout locations 2 weeks before each wedding I photograph.
I'll be photographing Maria & Ian's wedding on May 22nd and one of our stops will be the Vimy Memorial Bridge.
*The last time I was under the bridge was for a winter engagement session with Hannah and Austin, the last two pictures in this series
