🔬🌼 Chimaphila umbellata 🇪🇳 pipsissewa 🇫🇷 chimaphile à ombelles QC: native | indigène ON: native | indigene
Although pipsissewa has retained the ability to photosynthesize, it also taps into underground fungal networks to obtain supplemental carbon, nutrients, and water through mycoheterotrophic relationships. This nutritional strategy, known as mixotrophy, combines photosynthesis with heterotrophic nutrition, allowing the plant to supplement its energy needs. In the deep shade of mature forests, these fungal associations can provide a substantial portion of its carbon budget. By comparison, ghost pipe (Monotropa uniflora), another member of the Ericaceae family, has evolved to become fully mycoheterotrophic, relying entirely on fungi for its carbon and no longer photosynthesizing.
