Shutterjet Former Toronto photojournalist R. Jeanette Martin is transplanted to the wilds of Gabriola Island, BC

After living in Toronto for over 20 years, including a 10 year stint photographing for NOW Magazine, photojournalist R. Jeanette Martin has moved to the gulf island of Gabriola in the Salish Sea. Transplanting a street photographer from Canada's largest urban centre into the wilds of British Columbia could prove interesting. You can take the girl out of Toronto, but can you take Toronto out of the girl?

Today I’d like to share the page of not just one amazing photographer, but many wildlife photographers who participate in the annual Wildlife Photographer of the Year contest and exhibit. I make an annual trip down to Victoria, BC specifically to see this incredible exhibit of nature photography from around the world, on display currently at the Royal BC Museum until April 19th.

One of the incredible images you can vote for is of this brown-throated three-toed sloth mother cradling her young in her arms to shelter it from the rain.

Photographer Dvir Barkay observed this mother and her baby at La Selva Biological Station in Costa Rica. They spent most of their time high up in the canopy.

Brown-throated three-toed sloths aren’t the world’s fastest animals – in a week, they moved between just three trees.

Downpours are common in the area. One afternoon, as the rain fell, the female nestled her young in her arms, sheltering it so it didn’t get too wet.

This image shows the baby with its arms wrapped around its feet, asleep in its mother’s embrace.

In my continuing effort to combat the immense amount of AI slop, today I’d like to share another photographer’s page that I greatly admire. Cristina "Mitty" Mittermeier captures the natural world and the people in it, while also being a conservationist, advocate, and storyteller. Please consider liking and sharing the work of real, dedicated, professional photographers such as her.

I follow a lot of incredible photographers in this Facebook land. It’s become very disconcerting then, that the majority of what I see on my professional and private pages is AI slop masquerading as the real, natural world. I could get into all the stupid things I’ve seen from AI slop, and bitch about it for hours. Instead, I’m going to begin sharing with you real photography taken by professionals, in the hopes that you’ll follow their pages too. Some of these professionals are so good at what they do, that people accuse them of being AI, further blurring the lines. Rest assured that anything I share on here is very much the real world. Please, be more disconcerting with what you view and share and consider the source of where it’s coming from.
And with that, I present to you Mark Smith Photography and his wondrous world of birds.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Most especially if you attended the Christmas Boat Light Festival held this past weekend at Silva Bay Resort & Marina on Gabriola Island. An estimated 1000 people were in attendance for the spectacle of lights, with lots of local vendors, food trucks, music and merriment. It was a fine event to warm up the holiday spirit!

The Gabriola Volunteer Fire Department helps to make this the most wonderful time of the year, with their annual Food, Toy and Cash Drive. Bins placed around the island are filled with holiday cheer for those in need. This past Saturday, the bins were collected by the fire truck brigade, decorated from tires to sirens, with lights, wreaths and unbridled joy! Please donate generously this holiday season if you can. Your heart may just grow three sizes that day.
