A couple nice bolts in last night's storm over Fredericton ⚡️ We don't seem to get as many storms as we did when I was a kid, but boy do I love them.

Chimney Swifts circling before roosting for the night in a chimney in Fredericton.

This is a 600+ image manual stack showing a few hundred birds spending several minutes swooping overhead after sunset, before dropping into the chimney within the span of a minute or two. I was hoping to capture the movement and energy of these delightful little birds with this technique. 🤣

A couple nebulae I’ve photographed over the past month 🌌

The North America Nebula (NGC 7000) - a massive cloud of glowing hydrogen gas so large it spans roughly 50 light years across.

And the Elephant’s Trunk Nebula (IC 1396) - a dense column of interstellar gas and dust about 2,400 light years away, where new stars are actively forming.

Every tiny point in these images is a whole star. Some of the light here started travelling toward Earth before humans even invented the telescope. 🦨

Warmer nights mean I’m back outside photographing space again! 🌌 🦇

Set my alarm for 2:00 AM and spent about two hours imaging the Pelican Nebula (~2600 light-years away) in Cygnus. Can’t wait to chase more deep-sky objects this summer. 📸✨

My top 25 of 2025 + a little bts ✨

This was a fun year! I’m self taught, but this year in particular I made a conscious effort to really learn more, practice, and improve on a lot of the Milky Way and night sky pictures I’ve been taking.

I’ve also always been a photo-walk kinda person, I’ll set aside an hour or two and just go out somewhere, chill out, and take pictures of whatever I see. I call it “going fishing,” lol with my little gear bag and thermos in tow. But this year I also really started planning out certain pictures way more intentionally than ever before. Maps, apps, settings, timing, pre-stalking a location - having a picture in mind first, then trying to go capture it. I’ll never stop doing photo walks, but I’ve loved the intentional shots too, and I look forward to making more of these next year.

I also received my first ever artsNB grant this year - as a photographer! This felt super exciting and really validating, and I look forward to sharing more about my project in 2026.

All in all, I felt this was a pretty good year. I didn’t get out as much as I would have liked in the first half, but I met some other local photographers (did a few northern light chases with some of them!), put in a few really late nights, and had a lot of fun.

My goals for next year are simple: to continue enjoying photography, and to continue growing. 📸

Happy New Year!
