The 7th empower challenge is Light it Up, where the image must show intentional use of an artificial light source to illuminate the subject and/or the scene.

I've wanted to try this style of image for a while where there is a front light on the dog and a light behind the dog with a coloured gel that illuminates falling water. The exact outcome isn't predictable as it depends on how the water falls, but that's part of the fun! With Tully, I knew I wanted to try a blue gel to compliment her eyes.

The judges felt that the blue in the background was too electric and competed for the viewers attention so this image was not awarded top 10 or shortlisted. I love it anyway and I'm quite happy with the images we created.

The 6th challenge in Empower is in-depth, where the goal is to create an image that uses depth as a compositional technique that leads the viewers eye through the image to the subject. I went out back in May to photograph for this challenge, knowing that I wanted to use an image in the apple blossoms.

The video is a little behind the scenes of Maia, Bumblebee, and Ellie deciding they would rather wrestle than pose 😂 just a wee reminder that your dog doesn't have to be focused and calm throughout a session! Breaks for zoomies, wrestling matches, cuddles, and sniffs are all welcome!

The 5th Empower challenge was Monolicious where the image must be monochromatic. The goal was to use tone, texture, and layers to help the image tell a story.

I love this image of Delilah at Jasper Lake as her expression and the light coming through the clouds gives a feeling of serenity.
