"The Light Layers of Vietnam"

A new print from my time in February spent in the hills of northern Vietnam.

Hope everyone's having a good Monday! What's your favourite place in the world to watch a sunset?

The Power of Light

In my lighting workshops I often talk about how learning and understanding how to use off-camera flash and studio strobes - "introduced lighting" - can actually help us create images that seem more natural, despite the fact that it's not "natural light".

The image on the left was one shot naturally - that's to say, without any other light than what was there in the scene. As the sunrise was brighter than my subject in order to expose so that he wasn't in shadow (a silhouette), I had to over-expose the sky. This washes out the rich, warm colour of the sky and gives me an image that's pretty flat and boring.

But using lights - as seen on the right - I'm able to keep my background exposure where I want it (rich and warm) and fill in the shadows with some off-camera flash, which also helps the colours of his immaculate regalia to pop. The image on the right, "A Warrior's Soul", went on to become probably the most popular image that I ever shot. But if I had remained afraid of introduced lighting (which was the case for years) I would have been stuck with the image on the left, which isn't at all, to me, memorable.

Calling all portrait photography lovers!

Every year around this time of year, Wayne Simpson Photography and I lay out our line-up of portrait events for the year ahead, and there's no time like the present to share with you our plans for 2027 for you planners.

We're proud to have some of the longest (if not the longest?) running educational portrait events in Canada, and over the years we've taught portrait skills to hundreds of students.

For those interested in upping their portrait game in 2027, we are pleased to be bringing our workshops to the following locations next year (each year we choose different places across Canada):
- Calgary (January, 2027, B+W Portraits)
- Kamloops, BC (June, 2027, CHARACTER)
- Halifax, Nova Scotia (June, 2027, CHARACTER)
- Elora, Ontario (August, 2027, CHARACTER)

If you are interested in attending any, please email me at [email protected] and indicate which one you are interested in.

ALL of these will launch in the next week, and spots will go out first to those on our notification lists. Our workshops usually fill up quickly, so if you want to make some portrait magic next year, be sure to consider coming!

What are these workshops?
For the past ten years (!) we have held CHARACTER, which is a 3-day event concentrating on the art of the Environmental Portrait. It's a year of film school condensed into 3 days, and we absolutely love holding this event each year!

Next year, for all you Alberta folks, we're going to do the very first rendition of a new workshop offering.... MOOD ...all about the art and craft of Black and White Portraiture.

We're going to come to Calgary (one of our favourite placees in Canada) in January to kick off this new series.

*****

If you've never attended one of our portrait events before and feel intimidated, please don't! We've taught everyone from complete rookies to seasoned pros, and we'll break down the process of portraiture to you in a way that gets you creating your own magic as soon as possible.

Once again, if you are interested in attending any, please email me at [email protected] and indicate which one you are interested in.

Finally, we have had a few people looking to sell their spots in this year's Camp Create, which is an incredibly fun 4-day event on beautiful Prince Edward Island....literally held at a summer camp. 5 teachers, 4 days of creative madness, and a lifetime of memories! I'll post up the link for that in the comments, and just message me if you're interested in one of the spots.

Excited for the year ahead!

Want to watch my recent journey through Bolivia, co-leading a photography workshop for the incredible OFFBEAT?

My Bolivia Travelogue is now LIVE!

I recently spent 14 days travelling through what can best be described as an absolute paradise of a photographer's playground, which included 4 or 5 days of "play" time and then ten days co-leading a group of photographers through this wonderful landscape.

I don't know if you caught my Vietnam travelogue, but I've done the same for Bolivia and would love it if you took a watch. It's about 40 minutes, and in it you'll see just what a special place Bolivia is.

Full watching details in the comments...and here are a few photos from Bolivia to give you a preview of what we encountered.

Cycling through a dream.

Seen on the Salar de Uyuni early last week. Just part of the weird, whacky, and wonderful that makes up this area of Bolivia.

Just one more week for your chance to win this print! Details in the original post :-)

Just one more week for your chance to win this print! Details in the original post :-)

It's been a while since I've done a print giveaway here, but it's time!

I want to give someone a copy of this: a signed original of an image I took just earlier this month that I call "Visions of Vietnam".
,
Winning is fairly easy in the scheme of effort, but I'm going to make an "ask" of you. I've finally decided to start recording my creative travels, and I would love for you to follow along.

I have a YT channel, and if you'd kindly help me out by subscribing (or even watching my first major video which is a travelouge on my Vietnam trip), let me know, here, in the comments. Honour system!

In two weeks I am going to randomly draw a name and send you a big signed print of this one!

PS - head to the comments to find the address of my YouTube.

For years, I’ve seen photos and heard of people’s experiences on the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia. It’s one of “those” places on Planet Earth where people (and photographers, especially) flock to. It’s an Icelandic waterfall. It’s Machu Picchu. It’s Lake Louise. It’s one of those icons of beauty in the world - it’s the largest salt flat lake on the planet.

When it floods, it also becomes the world’s largest mirror.
Seeing countless incredible photos from this place is nice….but it can also be a detriment to a photographer wanting to do something “different”.

Different is my drug, and I love experiencing the world through my eyes…and not trying to recreate what I’ve seen.

When we drove out onto the salt pan last night, it was the first time I laid eyes on this marvel. And as I wandered around the flooded salt lake under the stillness of the stars and the full moon, I realized I didn’t really care what I came up with my camera. Truly.

It was more about just being there.

I spent a couple wonderful hours with friend and fellow photographer Paul Nicklen Photography, and our kind, funny, and resourceful Bolivian guides. We laughed. Drank hot chocolate. Snapped some images. And just took it all in.

Self-portrait. El Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia.
