Doing my very small part to raise some awareness for colon cancer. So very grateful to the medical team at Lakeridge Health for their care, compassion and expertise during my journey with colon cancer last year. Thankfully a full recovery that allowed me to slowly return to normal activities - including being trackside with my camera in hand.

Nine out of 10 people can be cured when colorectal cancer is caught early.

David is living proof.

After noticing blood in his stool, he spoke with his doctor. A colonoscopy detected cancer early, and surgery successfully treated it.

Now cancer-free, David has one message:
👉 Don’t delay screening.

If you’re 50–74, a simple F***l Immunochemical Test (FIT) kit you can do at home every two years can help detect cancer early.

When I created Glory Days Motorsport Photography in 2024 I really didn't know what to expect as far as sales or even interest in my images. I certainly didn't expect that I would be published in motorcycle.com.

Neil Graham - thank you for trusting me with providing the action shots you needed for this trilogy.

It has been a great two years of shooting motor racing professionally - focusing primarily on vintage car and motorcycle racing and even some professional motorcycle racing. I have made a lot of new friends along the way and look forward to continuing to capture trackside memories through magazine quality images for my clients.

Wishing all my racing friends a very Happy New Year! May 2026 bring you good health, happiness, and faster lap times.

Warmest regards - David

If racing is life, it’s a hard life indeed. After a long absence from the track, Neil Graham decided to give racing a final shot. Little did he know it would take years just to start and finish a single, solitary race. This three-part series tells the tale.

Posting on behalf of Julie Simard - who like many of my clients has become a good friend. Julie was recognized earlier this month as the VRRA's 2025 Rookie of the Year. Congratulations Julie! Very well deserved. It has been great seeing you improve throughout the 2025 season and I look forward to watching you continue to improve next season and beyond.

Comments from Julie:

It is with great honor that I announce that I have been named the VRRA Rookie of the Year for 2025!

I worked hard to improve my times throughout the season, and it paid off! I am very proud of myself, considering that I thought I would only ever race once in my life and didn't think I had what it takes to be competitive.

I am extremely well supported, and I could not have had such a great first racing season without the help of my family and friends.

Thank you to my friend Yannick Laflamme for convincing me to get my racing license in the spring, to Laurent Laliberté-Girard and Holly Varey for coaching me, to Martin Gaudreault and Claude Girard for their help with the mechanics of my bikes, to André Lavoie and Chantal Désy for their support, and to my racing partner Jean-Philippe Audet-Hall, who motivates me to push myself every time and who deserved to win this award just as much as I did.

Thanks also to Jean-François Cyr, who helped me take my first steps in the world of motorcycle racing and who makes room for me every time we go to an event in the US, and thanks to everyone who follows me and encourages me in my passion.

VRRA Racer Spotlight: Bernard Roy on his 2018 Ninja 400

This is Bernard’s first year racing. I asked him what was the catalyst to start racing this season - “ With a lot of coaching from my friend, Harvey Renaud and several years of trying to keep up with him on during tracks days I figured why not.”

He is racing a 2018 Ninja 400 - which he transformed from a street bike to a full race bike with parts from MotoMike Canada and 613 Motorpsorts. Sebastian at Sebspeed Customs undercut the gears.

Bernard also shared with me “ The folks at the VRRA and all the great riders I was competing against made for an amazing summer on the track. Being able to get on the podium in the last race of the year was the cherry on top. It was so much fun and I am looking forward to doing it again next year!”

Bernard also wanted to say “ a special thank you to my wife Carrie Fielden for her support. “

Bernard - congratulations on a great first season and your first VRRA Podium! Looking forward to seeing you on track again next season.

Wishing you all the best, David

VRRA Racer Spotlight: Ben Willard

This is Ben’s third year racing, but this is his first full season racing a 600c motorcycle. Ben races a 1987 Honda Hurricane 600 F1 - which also happens to be the first year of Honda’s production of this bike.

I asked Ben how he got interested in motorcycles - and it was a result of his dad - Ben grew up going to VRRA race weekends as well as Super Series race weekends. His dad also had an influence on Ben’s plate number 437. “My dad raced plate 379, and then for track days he had plate 37, so for my plate we just put a 4 in front of the 37.”

I also asked Ben what some of the highlights and low points of this season were for him. “The season got off to a rough start, and I wasn’t able to complete round 1, however when we returned to Shannonville for the final round it was a very good weekend. I needed up with a second place finish in Open Jr - I think I surprised a lot of people including myself.”

“One of the low points was a crash in the endurance race. My team of Phil Uhola and Al Diger were in third place and I crashed my bike in the last 30 minutes.”

Ben is looking forward to next season, “I am going to go out and have some fun and see what each weekend brings. I like putting up a good fight with everyone.”, said Ben.

Ben would also like to thank all the volunteers and VRRA executive for all the work they do to make these race weekends happen. He would also like to give a huge thank you to his two sponsors: Paul Simmonds Auto Sport Concepts, and Twoth Racing.

Congratulations on a great season Ben, and your first full season racing the 600. Wishing you all the best for next season and beyond. See you trackside next year.

VRRA Racer Spotlight: Jean-Philippe Audet-Hall

This was Jean-Philippe’s first season of racing with the VRRA and it was great to not only see his progress throughout the season, but to get to know JP better as the season went on.

JP switched from racing a 1991 Kawasaki ZX6 - which he first raced at round 2 to racing a 2018 KTM RC390 for the final two rounds. He shared with me after making the switch that he really does love the lightweight bikes.

In reflecting back on his first season racing, JP told me “From earlier this year, I see a world of difference in my skills and my confidence and this is a big thanks to my friends and co racers who push me to perform like I didn't even think I could! “

It was a bit of a roller coaster weekend to finish out the VRRA season for JP - he had a great 3-hr endurance race with his endurance racing team-mate Bruce Uyeda. He had some great practice sessions Saturday morning, and then a crash in the afternoon. Thankfully JP was not seriously injured - but the bike did sustain some damage … but with the help of some of the members of team OCTO Racing and the FBR team, JP was able to fix the bike into the wee hours Saturday night and race Sunday to finish strong.

I asked JP if he had any closing comments - “Just a big thanks for the season to the association and the people that makes it what it is. I loved that I was able to start my racing life this year in the VRRA. It is a very challenging and exciting sport, and that's what makes it so fun. I am looking forward to try to get better through the next seasons and hopefully walk up the grid to make better positions.”

Congratulations on a great first season JP! All the best for next season and beyond,

David

VRRA Racer Spotlight: Daryl Tearne on his custom built 1962 Norton Slimline Featherbed

This is a racer I want to spend some more time talking to next season. The 2025 VRRA Grand Prix at Shannonville Motorsport Park was Daryl’s first ever race. I am always thrilled to be able to capture’s racer’s first ever races - but what is really cool is that Daryl spent the last 10+ years building this race bike. It has a stock 750 Commando motor - which was put together by Herb B - but the rest of the bike was built by Daryl.

While he is a rookie racer, Daryl does has a little experience when it comes to bikes and bike design. He was the Motorcycle Designer for Crocker Motorcycles from 2006-2008, before becoming the Motorcycle Designer for Buell Motorcycles from 2008-2011 and then the Motorcycle Designer for Zero Motorcycles from 2011-2012. He switched gears, pun intended, and now works as a Toy Design Director for Spin Master Toys.

In his first race ever, he just missed the podium with a 4th place finish in his class and a 10th place overall finish in P1 Open.

Daryl will be back for more VRRA racing next season and is looking to improve on his laps times and results.

Daryl, it was a pleasure to meet you at Round 4. Look forward to talking more next season, and wishing you all the best at future races,

David

A little sidecar Saturday post: Driver Tony Shidla from Minneapolis, MN and passenger Tina Greenfield from Story City, IA racing their beautiful 2006 Baker 600cc F2 sidecar. It is always great to see our friends from the US come up and race at VRRA events. And it did not take long for these two racers to get comfortable on the long track at Shannonville Motorsport Park - achieving a first place victory in their Saturday heat race. Congratulations Tony and Tina! Hope to see you at more VRRA events next season.

VRRA Racer Spotlight: Gavin Slack on a 1990 Yamaha FZR600

There is something satisfying about capturing trackside memories for racers - and it’s especially satisfying when it’s a racers first race.

This was Gavin’s first year racing - and the 2025 VRRA Grand Prix at Shannonville Motorsport Park was his first race ever. Gavin participated in Friday’s VRRA endurance race with his boss - the infamous Woody (aka David Perceval) and Albert Diguer. I would say Gavin is off to a great start…. His first race produced his first podiums - with a second place finish overall and second in their class. Congratulations Gavin, Woody and Albert!

In talking to Gavin after the race, he said “I would like to thank Woody for helping me build the bike as well as coaching me through it all. I would also like to thank my father for letting me race and being there to support me through this journey. I am already looking forward to racing with the VRRA next season.”

Welcome to VRRA racing Gavin! Wishing you all the best next season and beyond,

David
