🏛 Altes Rathaus Göttingen – The Medieval Heart of the City
The Old Town Hall of Göttingen 🇩🇪 (Markt 9) is a magnificent example of North German brick Gothic architecture, constructed in 1270 and serving as the city's administrative center until 1978.

Key Facts:
• Architecture: A blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles (after 16th-century renovations), featuring guild emblems and sculptures on its façade.

History: This was where the city council convened, justice was administered, and prisoners were held in its basement cells.

The Oath Hall (Schwörsaal) with 14th-century murals is one of the oldest of its kind in Germany.

Today: The building hosts exhibitions and events, remaining a symbol of the Hanseatic city's independent spirit.

Did you know?: During the Thirty Years' War (1632), King Gustav II Adolph feasted here, and in the 18th century, the town hall was nearly demolished due to its dilapidated state!
