Batho Motlhake ~ The Custodian of the Lens📸🇧🇼

With a career spanning over sixteen years, Batho Motlhake has grown into a respected visual storyteller whose work bridges Botswana’s past and present. Through his multimedia production work, he captures both corporate narratives and deeply rooted cultural stories.

His dedication to documenting traditional history and preserving Batswana heritage adds an important perspective to this initiative.

His work reminds us that photography is not only about capturing moments, but about preserving identity and legacy.

The next theme for Fatshe Leno La Rona is now open.

This theme focuses on how Batswana make a living through work, business, skill, and everyday hustle.

We invite photographers across Botswana to document real-life moments of people at work, in markets, farms, offices, workshops, and communities.

This is an opportunity to tell stories that reflect our realities and contribute to a growing visual archive of Botswana.

📸 Submissions are now open and the link will be shared in the comments section.

Daily Life & Social Rituals – Submissions Closed

Submissions for the Daily Life & Social Rituals theme of Fatshe Leno La Rona have officially closed.

Thank you to the photographers who shared their perspectives and stories of everyday life in Botswana. Each image contributes to a growing visual record of our people, culture, and communities.

Meet the Adjudication Panel!

The Fatshe Leno La Rona photography initiative is guided by a panel of storytellers and visual practitioners whose work spans photography, filmmaking, and visual storytelling.

Together, they bring experience from wildlife and landscape photography, documentary storytelling, filmmaking, and creative direction.

Their role is to review submissions and identify images that best capture Botswana’s daily life, social rituals, and lived experiences, beyond the familiar wildlife imagery often associated with our country.🇧🇼

We look forward to seeing how photographers across Botswana interpret the themes.

The last but not the least on our panel of Adjudicators: TIRELO MOATSHE

Botswana storyteller, photographer, and filmmaker Tirelo MOATSHE joins the Fatshe Leno La Rona adjudication panel.

With over six years of experience capturing landscapes, wildlife, portraiture, and corporate narratives, Tirelo’s work focuses on authentic African storytelling through both photography and film.

He served as the storyteller for the Okavango Wilderness Project Delta Crossing 2024 and has collaborated with tourism and conservation organisations across Botswana.

As a creative who is passionate about nature, conservation, and mentorship, Tirelo believes every trail tells a story and he is dedicated to telling those stories with honesty and impact.

We are grateful to have his contribution to this initiative, because our stories can only be told authentically, by us, for the now and future generations.

Submissions for the current theme: DAILY LIFE & SOCIAL RITUALS are still on until the 10th of March 2026, after which we will introduce a new & exciting theme.

Submitting to the various themes is an added advantage.

Meet the Panel – ISAAC MARUMO

We are proud to introduce Isaac Marumo, one of the creative minds helping guide the vision of the Fatshe Leno La Rona Photography Competition.

Isaac is a Motswana filmmaker, cinematographer, writer, and photographer whose work explores the deeper power of visual storytelling. Over the years, he has directed a feature film, produced documentaries, created television advertisements, and lectured in animation and visual storytelling.

With a background in drawing and painting, Isaac approaches photography and film as part of the same visual language — where technical skill meets artistic expression.

As moderator for the competition, Isaac encourages photographers to look beyond technical perfection and focus on meaning.

The most powerful images are those that do more than simply show a scene. They speak to who we are, where we come from, and where we are going as a nation.

Through Fatshe Leno La Rona, photographers across Botswana are invited to share visual stories that reflect our heritage, identity, and everyday life.
