On our way back from Mababe with the Okavango Water Insights Project, the wilderness gifted us a gentle reminder of how fragile and extraordinary life in the Delta truly is.

There, right in the middle of the dusty road, was this young tortoise — small, determined, and moving with the slow confidence only nature can teach. While the world rushes past, he takes his time… one steady step at a time.

We stopped, not just to keep him safe, but to appreciate him. His shell carried the patterns of the Delta — earthy, ancient, beautifully carved by evolution. His eyes held a calmness that felt like wisdom far beyond his size. These are the quiet moments the bush gives you… the ones that make you pause, breathe, and remember why protecting this ecosystem matters.

With care, we helped him across the road, placing him right where he was headed. Because out here, every life — no matter how small — is part of the Okavango story.

Moments like this inspire us in our work: understanding the waters, the wildlife, and the delicate balance that connects everything in the Delta. And sometimes, that understanding begins with something as simple as stopping for a tiny traveller on a long road home.

Okavango is alive. Okavango is delicate. And every encounter is a reminder of why we must protect it. 🌿💧🐢
