Briefing the media, Mokgware said the Citizenship by Investment Programme remains on hold until the end of the year, while the government continues work on implementing the dual citizenship framework.

The minister also said the government intends to work with neighbouring countries to ensure that people with family and historical ties across borders can obtain identification documents from both countries.

The move could have significant implications for communities living along Botswanaโ€™s borders, where families and social ties often span neighbouring countries.

The Botswana Congress Party (BCP) has welcomed Noah Salakaeโ€™s resignation as Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, saying his decision to step aside allows him to focus on the corruption charges he faces.

The BCP also commended the DCEC for investigating and charging a sitting member of the political elite, while calling for the Directorate of Public Prosecutions to prosecute the matter without fear, favour or political interference.

The party further called on President Duma Boko to legislate the independence of the DCEC and strengthen the criminal justice system to ensure corruption cases are handled impartially and transparently.

The Botswana Government and six public service unions have reached a settlement over proposed changes to Local Per Diem and the Leadership Transformation Programme.

The agreement, made an order of the Lobatse High Court on 17 August 2026, means the planned Local Per Diem changes scheduled for 1 September will not be implemented for members of the six unions and public officers in the D band and below covered by collective bargaining, pending consultations.

Government must provide the unions with written reasons for the proposed changes by 19 August, while the unions have until 26 August to submit their responses.

The parties are expected to meet by 28 August before Government makes a final decision on the Local Per Diem changes.

Meanwhile, Government may proceed with the Leadership Transformation Programme for eligible Executive Cadre members. Consultations on its proposed implementation for officers on the D1 scale and below are scheduled to take place by 28 September 2026.

The settlement follows an urgent court application by the six unions challenging the implementation of the changes.

The Botswana Government maintains that the countryโ€™s laws recognise marriage only between a man and a woman, and do not provide for same-sex marriage.

Botswanaโ€™s Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs has raised concern over illegal immigrants entering the country using forged permits and documents.

Briefing the media, Minister Major General Pius Mokgware said authorities have encountered cases involving individuals allegedly using farming permits to work as teachers, while others are using fake permits to work as drivers.

Mokgware also warned of highly organised immigration cartels allegedly producing forged documents, including fake bank statements and other paperwork used to support immigration applications.

He cautioned the public to be vigilant, stressing that the government does not issue separate โ€œteacher permitsโ€ or โ€œdriver permits.โ€

The minister urged citizens and employers to verify immigration documents and avoid falling victim to fraudulent schemes.
