Billions of tons of rare earth elements and precious metals lie on the seabed, potentially determining the energy transition and thus the technological future of our planet. But is extracting them even worthwhile? This story with my photos has now been published in mare magazine no. 176. Text by Tim Schroeder. Many thanks to Anastasie for the great collaboration.

Seagulls at the beach of Eastdunkerk: As soon as the fisherman appears on the beach, dozens of seagulls also appear. They wait for the fisher and his horse to return to shore with their catch.The North Sea hosts a rich biodiversity. The North Sea is the biggest nature reserve in Belgium. As consequence of climate change the sea level will rise up to one meter. This signifies that Belgium’s coast will be flooded and will be uninhabitable.

Fisherman Günther and his horse Martha: Martha can work independently of Günther or only when he calls her. When a horse is three to four years old the training starts to get used to the water. It takes two years to train a horse.

Nele and her horse Axel: After fishing, Nele hitched her draft horse back to the cart. She and her family are now heading home through the village. She takes her daughter fishing as often as possible. Her daughter is already used to handling the huge draft horse and loves riding on its back.

Meeting in the morning at the beach of Eastdunkirk. In the summer the horse shrimpers sometimes meet and go fishing together. Usually the fishermen go out fishing alone.

Morning routine : Stefan gets Dina ready in the morning. Cleaning and brushing is a calm start to the day for both of them before they head to the beach and go fishing.

The moment we all have been waiting for is finally here!

We just want to thank every single photographer that took the time to prepare and submit their photo story. In the end, we relived nearly 1,000 stories. And while it might sounds like a cliché, it meant the world to us.
