With 30 years of experience living in Kyoto, I’ll guide you through some of the most scenic and culturally rich spots. I was born in Antwerp, Belgium, and enjoyed my teenage years during the peak of the "Flower Power Hippie" generation. I hitchhiked through Europe, living on a beach south of Agadir, Morocco, for some time to learn English. For most of my adult life, I was a public relations repres

entative for a Christian NGO in the Benelux area. Aside from Japan, I have lived in Indonesia, the Philippines, South Korea, and Singapore, to name a few. I love baking things such as bread, pies, and fruit cakes, and I am an avid Blues lover; some of my favourite artists are B.B. King, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. I enjoy a good movie with a glass of wine, a Belgian Trappist, and some Rochefort blue cheese. Since September 2012, I have been an honorary member of the Kyoto Guide Club. I have lived in Japan for almost 30 years, 5 years in Tokyo and 25 years in Kyoto, the ancient capital. My aim is to provide information about this extraordinary city to future travellers. If you have any questions related to Kyoto or Nara, don't hesitate to contact me.

Oh, hydrangeas of Kyoto, so fair and bright.

Mimuroto-ji Temple is a must-visit for hydrangea enthusiasts. It showcases the hydrangea in its most breathtaking display, both during the day and under evening lights.

A pink and blue hydrangea blooms at Yōkoku-ji in Kyoto, Japan.

Here’s a short video clip of my visit to Yōkoku-ji (楊谷寺), also known as Yanagidani Kannon (柳谷観音).

"In gardens they flourish, like dreams come alive,
With each passing season, their spirits revive.
Their fragrance enchants, a sweet-scented spell,
Drawing us closer, under their floral dwell."

Hydrangeas bloom at Yōkoku-ji in the Mountains of Nagaokakyō, Kyoto.

A typhoon recently passed through the Kyoto area, bringing heavy rainfall. I visited this temple to enjoy the hydrangeas in a serene mountain setting. Despite it being a Thursday, there were quite a few people there.

Yōkoku-ji (楊谷寺), a Buddhist temple under the authority of Komyo-ji Temple, the head temple of the Nishiyama Jodo sect of Buddhism, is situated beside a gorge in Nishiyama. It is commonly known as Yanagidani Kannon, or “the Goddess of Mercy by the gorge with willow trees."

Hydrangeas, dear hydrangeas, forever we'll cherish,
Your presence in gardens, where memories nourish.
A poem I offer, a tribute so true,
To the enchanting beauty that blooms anew.

Where the Full Moon Blooms: Rice Fields in Kyotanabe.

Last Sunday, I found a secluded spot to capture the full moon without any power lines or poles obstructing the view.
It lasted only five minutes, but it was incredible.

Ancient Elegance, Aoi Matsuri 2026.
FULL PARADE

The Aoi Matsuri (Hollyhock Festival), which began in the 6th century, was a response to crop failures that brought the nation to its knees. The Emperor sent messengers to the Kamo shrines to pray for harvests, and this ritual evolved into the legendary Heian-era procession we know today.

But why the hollyhock (aoi)? Spiritually, these leaves are more than mere decoration; they are ancient wardens. Placed on hats, carriages, and imperial robes, they are believed to purify the path, repel lightning, and shield Kyoto from evil spirits.

Where Tigers Guard the Fallen Leaves: Chogosonshi-ji.

I visited during the autumn season of 2020, but I never published the pictures.

Chogosonshi-ji, also known as Shigisan, is a historic mountaintop temple in Nara that uniquely combines martial legend with tiger symbolism. Founded by Prince Shōtoku, it is renowned as the “Tiger Temple” for its colossal papier-mache tigers, dark corridors that fulfil wishes, and breathtaking views of the Nara Basin.

The temple, founded in 587 by Prince Shōtoku Taishi, was established during his prayer for victory over the Mononobe clan. During his prayers, the Buddhist war deity Bishamonten, one of the Seven Lucky Gods, appeared to him.

The prince’s victory was attributed to the deity’s intervention. Bishamonten specifically appeared at the “hour of the tiger, on the day of the tiger, in the year of the tiger,” which is why the tiger holds a sacred place as the temple’s guardian and symbol. The name of the mountain, “Shigi,” translates to “a mountain worthy of faith and reverence.”

Cherry Blossoms and the Great Buddha of Tsubosaka in Nara.

Here are a few more pictures from my visit to this iconic temple.
Tsubosaka-dera (壷阪寺), nestled in the mountains of Nara, stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of ancient traditions and the beauty of nature. This revered temple, renowned for its healing properties, particularly for eye ailments, transforms into a sanctuary of solace during the sakura season. The giant statue of the Medicine Buddha, enveloped in a delicate veil of pink petals, exudes an otherworldly aura, inviting visitors to embark on a spiritual journey.
